Pistol River The Cape and Gold Beach 2023

Off Topic Comments, Help, Tips and Trick

by Ryan » Tue Jun 06, 2023 10:15 am

Jen and I arrived a week ago and so far have sailed 9 of 10 days on 4.7 or less, most days around 3.5 to 4.0.

The first weekend was a US long weekend so was busy, with Phil S making an appearance and showing us how it is done, pushloops, backloops, stalled forwards, wave 360's etc. Gleb was also here and is sailing impressively, landing many pushloops and riding the Rock waves well.

Cape Sebastian has been flat with just a little shore break wave but the Rock has been huge, over mast high the day before yesterday, only Jen and I went out.
No wind for the next few days but next week it is back on, hope to see some of you down here.

Sweet riding with you and Jen! Hope to see some more photos, and some loops from both of you! Let me know when you’re back to freestyle in squam! I’ll be joining :)

What size boards are you all sailing at Pistol River?

Sounds good, we need some more inspiration in Squamish.

The rule of thumb is body weight in kg plus 10 liters, so if you're 75 kg then use a 85 l board. Definitely larger than what you'd use at the Gorge or Boundary Bay.
I'm 88 kg, I've used everything from 85 l to 104 l, I like a 92 l when it's 4.5 and stronger and a 104 when it's 4.7 and lighter. Err on the side of bigger since the inside has a strong current at the rock, larger volumes help to maintain speed to clear the whitewater and get speed for jumps. Bigger is easier for sure. The pros make it look easy but it's not easy to get a lot of jumps at Pistol River (the Rock) due to the many intermediate whitewater waves and current.
Phil S (Pro) uses a 78 l , I'm guessing he's around 70kg or lighter. Jen is 77kg, she uses a 80 when it's 3.7 and a 87 l otherwise. Others are somewhere on the body weight plus 5 to 10 range. I asked Morgan Noireau one year, he recommended body weight plus 10.

For anyone in the area. Port Orford is windy now, here now.
Gold Beach is not.
