Surfing/supping this long weekend at Wesport

When there's absolutely no wind

by 8mdude » Tue Nov 04, 2014 7:50 am

Surfing or supping maybe an option this weekend. Westport is only 3 1/2 hour from here and much more economical than Tofino.

I would love to join you but we are off to Maui on Saturday!

Westport is a great spot. Lots of options for surf and it's often windy. This video was shot there (not my video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoWGAiik70I

Have fun!

Ya I stopped there on my way down the coast once. Nice place with some great waves. I never thought about sailing there though. It could be awesome! Can't do the long weekend though, still busy with work. :(

Amanlig, how do you get there in 3 1/2 hours? How do the locals like Canadians? Does Mr. Gray ever visit? Do you mostly surf south of the jetty?
Thanks, George

Well I'll tempt the wrath of the internet gods, and reply to my own post. I think the only way to get there in 3 1/2 hrs is to speed. Left here at 0215 and got there at 0645, so 4/1/2 hrs for me. So included only two brief stops.
No sharks, but seals...always make me curious, because there must be fish...then eventually the bad boys come sniffing around...haha.
No local angst in the lineup...cause I was the only one out there. Quite an side current/rip a few hundred meters south of the jetty, and the waves were a bit messy...6ft at 11sec, but really high tide and coming in fast with the near full moon I guess.
All in all...easily worth it and a cheap trip! Will go back.

Hey George, ya it's about 4.5 hours I would say. Glad you had a good time, are you still there?

And if you're in Westport, there are other spots in case the Jetty is too messy/washed out. The Cove is at the large Coast Guard tower, on the jetty access road to the right as you head towards the park. It works in huge swells and can be a barrel fest. The Groynes is at the entrance of Grays Harbour, across the street from the Islander Hotel and over the bric a brac. Lefts with a strong rip on medium to large swells. And "Cannons" the pick of the bunch, is a hollow right on a shallow sandbar in the middle of the entrance to Grays Harbour, a 30-45 minute paddle from Groynes (or boat trip if you can find/pay a friend in the harbour to give you a lift). Don't go to Cannons without a boat if it's big because the currents are brutal, and don't paddle out there alone and if not in great paddling shape!

I did it in 3 1/2 hours at one time.

-- I live in New Westminster (423 km from Westport according to Google map)
-- 1 minute wait at the border with my Nexus card
-- I travel 130kph
-- No stopping ( no traffic as well and no cops)

130kph * 3.5h = 455 km

I didn't have any bad experience with locals.

I don't know Mr. Gray.

But I agree, normal travel time is about 4 1/2 hours.

Michael back home...eagerly awaiting the am wind now. Thanks Tony for the info. I looked at the swell coming into the bay by the tower, but was too small. Next time.
Amanlig, nice work...130 and no cops, but more importantly... no Mr. Gray.
C'mon wind!
