Helmets, winter and neoprene caps

Windsurfing shop talk

I think I found a helmet that fits, it's a Mystic Predator. Bummed that for some reason it's $120 whereas every other helmet I see seems to be $100. Anyways, in the winter do people wear neoprene hoods or caps under their helmet? Is this something I should consider when fitting the helmet? The helmet would need a lot of wrap-around in the dial system (like most bike helmets) to fit with and without a hood underneath.

I usually never wear a helmet. In the summer, I wear a baseball cap for sun protection.

However, in the winter I wear a Gath helmet for a bit of warmth and bonus bump protection. I don't wear anything under the helmet, because I don't need more insulation.

I wear my hood under my helmet. Some have different size velcro pads that for a tighter fit in the summer without the hood.

I am not a fan of any hard shell helmets I have tried because, even when extremely tight I have gotten the bucket effect and feel like the whiplash choking is not worth the head protection and or the noise from the helmet takes away most of the charm of the foiling silence.

I'll readily admit that I send my myself flying into the water at higher speeds than most during every session and many people have no issues wearing hard shell helmets for cruising around.

After my foil chased be down which resulted in a couple stiches to the back of the head I have been researching kite specific helmets which don't look totally appealing to my specific needs but I did find these D3o products that look like they have some potential. If you don't know what D3o is google it, as its been a game changer in the sports protection industry.

I am going to give the liner a try and see if that will work in a surf cap:

My Gath surf helmet weighs nothing.

I'm particularly interested because of foiling but I would wear a helmet most days regardless. There is also these: https://dmcfins.com/collections/accesso ... luro-green

I'm also thinking about using a helmet mounted camera, otherwise I would definitely try the soft shell.

I have a Sandbox wake/skate helmet I wear for kiting or 4.2 and below windsurfing, I put an Ocean Rodeo neoprene toque under it in the winter. I also use it as a cam mount sometimes on mellow days, otherwise I prefer trucker caps.

I think Jerry made a cap like that by using a dollar store colander , cutting/shaping it with good scissor and a heat gun lol hmmm, i think i will make one of those, adding a string from cap to rash guard collar for keep.maybe also add strips of foam inside. I know about a wind surfer who probably drown from head impact to windsurfing gear at crazy (not recomended) Cabo Pulmo in mexico, and he probably had a real helmet . Those caps liner are too flimsy to dissipate board/mast impact compare to a padded helmet.

I’ve recently purchased a new soft surf helmet from Decathlon online from Quebec. I never wore helmets after windsurfing for 35 years or kiting for 20 years. I started kite foiling a few years ago and had a bad mishap last fall with my foil hitting my forehead near my eyes while in the water. Luckily minor cut and swelling. I now wear this soft surf helmet and find it light, secure, and vents well. Best part it only cost $20.00 plus shipping.

I use Pro-tec Ace Water helmets, I have 2 different size helmets. One for no hood and one for hood.
