JWSP - Monday

Windsurfing shop talk

by Chris Klohn » Sat Mar 15, 2014 9:40 pm

Hey Guys,

Monday will be very big at JWSP. All the models and both American and Canadian marine forecasts are calling for very strong onshore flow and a solid westerly gale. The local forecast is calling for 35-45 mph westerly winds Monday morning easing to 20-30 mph Monday afternoon.

Timing will be everything. The wind is supposed to switch west late Sunday night or early Monday morning. This will build the swell down Juan de Fuca Strait through the night until daybreak. Tides are setup perfect for steep waves all morning.

It's supposed to slowly back off in the afternoon. Monday isn't a day to hit the road late. Plan on going through the border around 0530 to be on the water by 0800. No different than getting up at 0500 to catch the 0630 sailing for Columbia Beach.

The only risk I see is it switching west too early on Sunday and powering out mid morning Monday. Check the usual actuals, Sheringham, Race Rocks, Smith, Ault Field and Oak Harbor. Monitor the forecast discussions and marine forecasts for changes in the strength and timing.

If I were home now, I wouldn't think twice about driving 4.5 hours each way for this forecast if the actuals are solid. This is a classic huge swell and big wave setup for JWSP. Much different than the moderate onshore flow and 15-25 mph local conditions forecast when Alton and Michael were down on Friday afternoon.

We'll see what happens...........

Hi Brad,

Still 36 hours out but things look very, very promising for Monday. 7 hours of 3.7-4.2 SE wind at Ebey today. Did you catch the waves on the Double Bluff webcam?

Cheers,

Chris

Hey Guys,

The latest forecast run is even better for the East Entrance of Juan de Fuca :D

The old forecast said: SUN...WIND SHIFTING TO WEST AND RISING TO 25 TO 35 KT SUNDAY EVENING...MON...W WIND 25 TO 35 KT...EASING TO 15 TO 25 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FEET

The latest forecast says: SUN...WIND SHIFTING TO WEST AND RISING TO 25 TO 35 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT...MON...W WIND 25 TO 35 KT...EASING TO 20 TO 30 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 3 TO 6 FEET

- The switch to west is later now which gives better odds for more wind in daylight hours.
- The strength the wind is "easing" to is 5 knots stronger
- The wind waves are 2' bigger

All good signs.............

Looks like a lot of wind up here during the night and into the morning, so I'm thinking of staying up here. G-Spot is showing a lot of wind here and we have a choice of either White Rock, Point Roberts or Acadia. I'm thinking Point Roberts could be awesome and with all the night wind a SUP session could be in order when the wind dies.EC has now issued a Gale Warning. :D

Michael. I'm leaning towards PR as well. See you there in the morning. Darrell

Hey Darrel, I'm going to see how things are looking in the morning. I might go to White Rock if it's looking good there.

Looks very promising tomorrow. Thinking an early start in case it ends early. I'll likely follow the majority, though lean to White Rock since something about an out going tide at PR...

Point Roberts looks sweet tomorrow!!! Should have some nice big swell too. Hey Mike, an outgoing tide actually pushes you north into the bay towards the ferry terminal. An incoming tide pulls you south towards the San Juans. Opposite of what you would normally think there. The tide setup is perfect for a W-NW wind with a Gorge like setup. No need to worry about trying to stay upwind :D

Cheers,

Chris
