Over a dozen kiters scored a 30 minute session at 3rd Avenue. Most on 12m at 2:30pm in S12-15. I was on my 10m and ended up down wind at Centennial. After it tanked 4 kiters had to swim in - lucky it was warm.

Congrats to AJ (8m) and Jeff (13.5m) who scored 2 hrs. Wish I had stayed later since it looks like came back 5pm.

Too light to windsurf but we saw Michael out.

Interesting. It seems it was just as windy at Stearman Beach in W. Van (just east of Pt Atkinson) as it was at Centennial. Look at the Point Atkinson readings here: http://weather.gc.ca/marine/weatherCond ... tionID=WSB

They may be a bit exaggerated if the wind gauge is right at the Lighthouse, but just off Stearman I'd say it was about 14 knots gusting 20, since I could keep my 7m sail going (planing) most of the time when I was out from 2 - 3pm. Regardless, it felt good to score a little ToW so close to home, for a change.

That's pretty sweet. I'll have to pay closer attention to the point atkinson weather.
Thanks for sharing.

Before I started windsurfing I used to crew on my buddies 40' full keel boat. Every time we came close to Point Atkinson our boat would get pulled into some gnarly directions because of swirly winds. I never trusted the wind sensor at Point Atkinson.

Right off Pt Atkinson you get swirly wind combined with churning sea-state caused by currents and reflected waves. It's a nasty spot in any craft so it's just as well there's no windsurf launch there.

A bit east at Stearman Beach there's a gentle beach with parking and room to rig on the beach. The exposure is good on easterlies through SW but no good on W or NW. It's been a local's winsurf spot for years but only on the occasional good storm.

Yesterday it was filled in and capping in the bay at Stearman most of the afternoon, with occasional lulls when it dropped to 10 - 12 knots. I'd say the gusts were about 20 knots, which is what Pt Atkinson read as average windspeed. So, for future reference I'll probably read Pt Atkinson as representing the gusts at Stearman and assume the average is about 5 knots less.

Regardless there was just enough wind for fun on big gear. It was definitely worth doing 7.0/110 litres during this wind drought.
