Best place to launch a kayak is probably the boat launch. Could also launch on third Ave, there's a spot right where the culvert comes out east side of the road. Can be really muddy at low tide though.

SWS is operational now. Check out the website under NEWS for new collection point. Also, make sure the wind is happening before driving up.

Yes Alton, it is a pain. I dont know all thats gone on, but it seems the people of the SWS must have worked hard behind the scenes to pull this season together against very difficult barriers. Also, it seems there are some people of influence in Squamish that are willing to help make it happen, too. It is a pain and the situation is sad but I want to thank the SWS and our Squamish allies for being able to get this far. One question related to all this trouble, tho; is there any proof that the partial spit removal will actually help restore the salmon numbers? Were any studies done indicating that all this deconstruction of the spit will be effective or is it all just a hopeful shot in the dark? Does anyone know? Edith Tobe?

"About 73 fish were tagged and 57 were detected. Of those 57, 39 went to Howe Sound and 18 went to the estuary. Of those 18, six used the recently opened 300-metre breach, three used a culvert and nine went around the island leftover at the end of the Spit."
Sounds like it's not all that effective. Other than that, it's anyone's guess how much it helps. So far their hydro modeling was shown to be incorrect by actual observations at the terminal, but SRWS denies the actual evidence.
The ultimate DFO plan was to decommission the whole spit, opening the river to previous course/top of estuary along train tracks where spit road starts, which would require building a new dyke to protect squamish from flooding and could link the spit island to protect the terminal from silting (realignment). This may still be Edith's ultimate plan, but at the pace her company/funding goes, it'll take decades. It's currently about 1/12th complete in two years at a cost of $2 million.

Where are wingers launching from now? Are they taking the shuttle over to Spit Island? Are they sloggin' out from Darrell Bay?

This is the spot on third Ave (top circle). Parking right there. That spot on 2nd Ave is semi private without much parking.
I've been launching from the bottom circle, South end of the blind channel with variable success before the shuttle started. Haven't tried the shuttle yet, but could make for a nice little downwinder on a strong day if you wing back with all your gear/there's a pump available at the spit
