Heads up that the latest water quality readings on either side of the sailing centre were both way over acceptable Ecoli values!

Station 701 is just west of the pier
Station 605 is just east of the kayak / paddle board rental

Things look fine once you get away from that area but I'd keep my head out of the water until I get 100m away from the beach.

Looks like we had another poop wave come through Jericho, I assume this was the heavy rain washing out the storm drains as the sample date is the same as the day we got 19 mm of rain for the first time in a month.

Hopefully it was short lived and only near shore, but the values were pretty bad right in the core launching area.

Even Acadia had a reading of 727 which is crazy as it gets very good exposure to the straight. This might indicate that it was Fraser River water flowing around from the North Arm as well as storm drain discharge. If you think about how many storm drains drain in to the Fraser and then it all flows around the point on the surface above the salt water.

Interesting the allowed levels in the Seine for Olympic Triathlon:

"E. coli levels should stay at or below 900 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters for “sufficient” water quality, according to World Triathlon."

From article in the Verge.

I drove by Jericho on the way to Dog Beach yesterday and the smell was intense even from the road. Also up at dog there was a lot of strange algae in the water (but no smell)

The smell was almost unbearable in the parking lot by the pier. It's normal to stink a bit there in the summer, but that was unreal. I caught a wingtip and fell in right out of the gate and thought I'd have pinkeye this morning, but so far so good. The wind forecast looks weak hopefully those numbers go down soon.

Scroll down to the map and click the marker for the testing station in question you will get the latest results. Unfortunately they don't archive previous e. coli scores to let you look for a trend, you only get the most recent one. I'm pretty sure this is deliberate.

Thanks.
Might have to rename the area soon.
Schitz Beach, Toto Basin, Plop Point…
Or something clever

Regarding the smell just west of the pier, near the parking lot…
The low concrete block building there is a sewage pump station (which intercepts the sewage that would flow into the ocean, and sends it to the Iona treatment plant). On warm days the odour from the pump station can be terrible, but it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with how the system is functioning. Other than the smell, the pump station is our friend.
Coliform counts in English Bay usually peak right after heavy rains like we had last Monday, or when we get the first rain after a long dry spell. That’s when the most “filth” gets washed off the streets and goes through the storm drains to the ocean. If you are concerned about water quality, it’s better not to swim in the local ocean (near any city) during the first few days after a storm.
Hope this helps.

I've never smelled it anywhere near as bad as it has been this year. Last time I was there it stank from the pier to the east concession. That was 5 days after the big rain.
