It it possible to launch (windsurfing) straight into the river from the parking lot this year? Or would that be complete madness?

Previously there was a way to launch 1/3 down the spit. Francis even had a special rigging spot there...

Yes, you can launch into the river. Some people even launch where the yellow gate from sandy beach. Comming back could be tricky if wind will drop, hard to slog back against the current.

Watch out for submerged logs, there are quite a few around that sandbank. Usually pretty clear from about halfway down the spit road though
