2022 - Skwxwú7mesh Island is nice

My belief is the town gets to hot and thermals occur causing the gusts and shifts in the wind. As anecdotal evidence I found 12 plus turkey vultures hanging out at the terminal. Having windsurfed Squamish for thirty years my opinion is that this effect has been increasing over the last 5 years or so.

Lots more concrete and bulldozed forests will definitely make for more heat and more thermals in town. Maybe disrupting the flow of air to the north. Oddly, the spit road was one of the calmest spots in town yesterday afternoon with even a bit of NW breeze

Nudged something today. Maybe a shark or a bear. Looked at my board.

Whaaaa?? happened to the fin? I guess it's swimming with the fishes.

half the base makes a nice little souvenir

Yikes, there sure is a lot of stuck woody debris out there this year and a lot of seals too! Having a hard time remembering where all the logs are at while they change daily. Guessing that's a lasting result of the crazy rains back in October?

This paper shows an association between the development of an urban heat island and wind, the same thing is probably happening in Squamish. In Squamish's case the wind might shift more West?

Surfboard fest (at least 8) in the glassy river today. Lit on 8m+surfboard in steady SW 20-24 cranking hero turns.

"Squamish's case the wind might shift more West?"
At the spit yes, and at nexen the wind shifts from the east at around the same time, and you can see birds soaring on the thermal centered around the terminal.

"cranking hero turns."
With what's going on in Ukraine maybe we should just say "cranking turns"?

I was riding a 24cm stubby fin on Wednesday. There was a very quick and loud crack. Feet stayed in the footstraps. I spun out a bit. No drama at all.

The first time I hit a tree many years ago, I was riding a 95 litre race board with a 6.0 7-batten 6-cam race sail. Fully powered, so I was going fast. Tuttle race fin 30-something cm. The fin hit the tree lengthwise like an axe splitting firewood.

I went over the handlebars and flew 20 feet. The fin was embedded into the end of the tree about 12 inches. It took a while to separate my gear from the tree. The fin was gouged. Tuttle box held strong. However the back of the board was bent. I waterstarted, and tried to hook in. But my spreader bar was snapped in half.

It would be interesting to compare satellite images on Google Earth at various times to see the recent impacts of development in Squamish. Is it a significant change in the grand scheme of things?
