Cypress 24/25

When it's absolutely too cold

Alton wrote:Doug - thanks for the report. I'm assuming from your report that most of the Lions and Eagle runs were open without any signs of "brown" patches.

I hope Cypress recovers from all the recent snow lost when we (Silver Xtra) return from the Xmas blackout period.

There were no brown patches. While the Cypress report stated that they had received 45 CM of new snow in 24 hours at mid mountain, I stopped half way down the Olympic run and stuck my ski pole in the snow and I would guess that it was about 30 CM. It's possible they might have had 45 CM of new snow up in the Sky Chair area but it did not open before I left. There was more moisture in the snow towards the bottom of the hill but it was still great on the fat skis.

Upper Bowen, Bowen Face, Rainbow, Lower Cat Track, and Lower Fork were closed but that was a bonus for the people who ducked under the ropes and got more fresh tracks. I wouldn't be surprised if some people went down the Raven area runs but that would be too far to walk out for me.

Live Pow is forecasting 30 CM for tonight and another 21 CM for tomorrow morning. They predict the freezing level will rise to around 1250 M in the morning so wear your best Gore Tex!

It was good to chat with Mike this morning in front of the lodge although the conversation was cut short when they surprisingly announced that they were opening the Lions Chair at 8:45 AM. Had some nice turns with Rob with about 5-10 CM to start with and probably around 15 CM by 11 AM as it was snowing steadily all morning. Almost no line-ups for the first two hours.

Good seeing you Doug. My nephew is out for only a short time and I decided to pull the ski day trigger today. It was a very nice payoff with so many things going well such as no traffic, Loins opening at 8:45, lots of runs opening, near no line ups etc.

Alton - your last session's talk of ripcord made us try that one and it was great.

The conditions were pretty good this morning. Relatively smooth grooming and brief appearances of blue sky. Skied for two hours with minimal line-ups.

Had some good turns on the corduroy with Skier Bob until about 10 AM when the line-ups got brutal. Saw Alton, Tony, Bill and James there. When I drove down about 10:45 AM, parking lot 3B was about half full and there was a line of cars stopped bumper to bumper all the way down past the works yard. Really.

Day 12 - A Happy New Year indeed. All the Silver Pass Desperados appeared today. Hero groomers for epic turns until 10am when the wait times became uncivilized.

Day 13 - A day of misery with LeopardSkin. Wet drizzle and fog. On the bright side the snow was slushy and grippy. Did my obligatory 1.5 hrs before calling it quits.

Wet boots.

If you don't have an electric boot dryer, here's a trick.

A lot of laundry dryers include a drying rack meant for items that should not be tumbled. You may have this feature, and you don't even know about it.

The boot liners were soaked. Don't worry. My boot soles are clean. No need to pull the liners out of the shells.

Throw the gloves in there too.

Select the "rack dry" mode. Let it run for a couple of hours.

Day 14 - Super fun day without LeopardSkin. Spent the morning snowboarding with Warren scoring 10-15 cm of untracked down Hutch (3x), Cat Track (2x), Gibsons (3x) and Upper and Lower Rainbow (3x). Gave up waiting for Sky Chair to open so left at 11:30.
