Cypress Mountain 2022/ 2023

When it's absolutely too cold

by drh » Thu Mar 02, 2023 3:27 pm

The snow cam showed 5 CM of snow before 10 PM last night, then a further 10 CM by 6:15 AM this morning. When I arrived at the hill it was a bit surprising to find a crust on top, as there must have been some freezing rain before dawn. Moons was do-able but a bit of work to negotiate the crust and the bumps. My run of the day was Crazy Raven which was so smooth underneath that the crust was not an issue. No line-ups. Saw Alton, Skier Bob, Rob, Clay, Bill, Taylor and James.

Day 60 - Disappointed on arrival with the lack of powder ... but still had tons of fun snowboarding. First took the Eagle chair then immediately darted for Crazy Raven (3rd tracks with epic turns). Marginal crust over 10 to 15 cm of fresh. Stayed on the Raven chair all day:

2 x Crazy Raven
4 x Olympic
1 x Shoreline (too crusty)
3 x Lower Coyote 7
2 x Upper and Lower Coyote 7

Coyote 7 was super epic and not as bumpy as it looked. Deep 20 cm of pow on skiers right made for bottomless rides.

Usual suspects included Doug, Clay, Bill, Rob, Bob ... and even Benito!!!

Doug - was that you who had a yard sale at the bottom of Upper Coyote 7?

Important dates:

Demo days: March 11, March 18

Pool party: March 18. Maybe it's a freestyle event. Maybe it's a slush cup. I guess we'll find out soon.

Brewski: March 25, March 26. I miss doing shotskis.

Day 61 - My best skiing session of the season. Supreme groomers under mix of sun and cloud - perfect for cranking turns all morning.

Made huge progress carving on skis (hopefully it wasn't just due to supreme groomers) by leading with the inside (uphill) knee then following with the outside knee when transitioning into angulation. I believe this is analogous to the "torsional twist" on a snowboard.

Day 62 - Epic day snowboarding (9am - 1pm). Only 10 cm on main runs but heavenly knee high pow off-piste:

2 x Upper and Lower Fork (20 cm) FIRST tracks with Mike
1 x Panorama and WindJammer with Mike
1 x Gibsons, Upper Rainbow (knee deep) and Rainbow with Mike
3 x Rip Cord (under Sky Chair) knee deep FIRST tracks with Patrick
2 x Glades and Top Gun (knee deep) with Patrick
1 x Slash (knee deep) with Patrick

None of the usual suspects except for Bob, Mike and Patrick. Civilized 5 min wait times for lifts.

Many thanks to Patrick for introducing me to Top Gun and Slash

Day 63 - Fun morning skiing with Mike and King. Fantastic groomers with a 3cm of fresh. Cruised around everywhere even scored close to first tracks on Sky chair. Wait times quite civilized until 11am.

Yep, today was a good one. Lots of variety with workable lines ups. Lowly day 15 for me!

Day 64 - Epic snowboarding day !!! Only expected 5 cm of fresh but it was way better. Enjoyed 10 - 15 cm and even 20 cm off-piste.

3 x Sunrise Park + Bowen (skier's left untracked)
2 x T33 + Top Gun (FIRST tracks !!!)
2 x Lower Coyote 7 (skier's right untracked)
1 x Black on Black
1 x Olympic

Most of the usual suspects including Clay, Doug, Bill, Rob, Brian, Mokka ...
