Cypress Mountain 2020/ 2021

When it's absolutely too cold

by drh » Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:05 pm

Today was a gamble as avalanche.ca had called for 5-15 CM last night with a further 15-25 CM today, but snowforecast.com said the freezing level was supposed to be a rather high 1200 M this morning. It rained heavily all the way up the Cypress road but it was 0 C and snowing in the parking lot. Surprisingly, they opened the Lions chair first at 8:55 AM. Had great fresh tracks with Skier Bob on Upper Bowen, Black on Black, and a number of others. Also did the run under the upper part of the Raven chair for the first time this year. Not as many people as usual on the slopes considering it was a Sunday with fresh snow. Lot 3A was only about half full when I left around 11 AM.

Interesting morning at Cypress. It was pouring rain in the parking lot at 8 am when I dropped my daughter off for work, but soon switched back to snow. It snowed all morning but was mixed with rain again when I left at 1130.
Had some fun skiing in the new snow on Slash, Bowen Face, Cat Track trees etc. Too bad Sky Chair didn’t open until after I left that side of the mountain; the snow up top must have been really nice.
Goretex and fat skis saved the day!

I wasn't expecting much today as there was only about 5 CM showing on the web cam at 6:30 AM. However, avalanche.ca had predicted 20-30 CM of mixed snow and rain last night with the freezing level dropping from 1200 to 800 metres. Luckily I brought the fat skis as the forecast proved to be right. There were lots of great deep powder turns to be had, particularly higher up. Fabulous runs on Upper Bowen, Meteor, upper Raven chair chute, Coyote, Blow By, Trumpeter, The B Hip, and others. Good to see Alton there along with most of the usual gang.

Day 18 - HEAVY pow day. 10-15 cm on Crazy Raven so spend all my time snowboarding there. Turns were difficult without a pow board .... then finally figured out I could pop my back foot and pivot on my front to make it work.

Fun day with the usual suspects.

IE. 10-15 cm of Cypress sludge.

Wednesday morning was sun and firm corduroy.

Spotted Alton's car in the parking lot.

Day 19 - Bluebird sky with firm sub-standard grooming ... still good skiing conditions. Big crowds so stayed on the Raven chair for shorter wait times. Spotted LeopardSkin on Panorama.

Mokka and I did the aft shift again; parked at the Raven end of the lot and skied to the chair at 1pm. A LOT busier than last week when we did the same, with 10-15 min lines at Raven. Snow on the lower part of the mountain wasn’t great so we headed to Sky after a few runs. Much better their! Our best runs were Sky Chair Glades and Top Gun, which had softened nicely in the afternoon sun. Would have been a spectacular sunset if we could have tolerated the crowds but we left at 4 pm instead.

Day 20 - Bluebird sky over Vancouver socked in cloud. Teeth chattering hard pack conditions at first. Bottom half of Crazy Raven softened. Benny's was soft most of the way. Absolutely zero wait times for the Raven chair until 10am so stayed there all morning.

Nice layer of fresh snow (about seven CM) on the groomed runs this morning. Had some good runs with Jerry (lost Clay somehow). Not as many people as expected for a Sunday with some powder. Almost no waiting on the Eagle chair up to 10 AM although Lions was packed right from the start.
