Cypress Mountain 2020/ 2021

When it's absolutely too cold

by drh » Sun Feb 21, 2021 1:46 pm

At 6:30 AM Cypress posted that there was 15 CM of new snow but it was 1 degree and a mix of rain and snow at the bottom. Took a chance and headed up. It turned out to be a great decision. Although the Lions chair got crowded after the first run, there were few people at Eagle for the first half hour. Lots of great powder turns on the fat skis on my favourite runs in the Raven area. Skied to 11 AM with no line-ups at the Raven chair, and still got fresh tracks on my last lap.

Dang! Got up as usual at 6:00 AM. Checked the camera at Cypress and looked like no real snow and too much rain. Still trying to figure out the secret to weather forecasting. Saturday was a good day for me.

Sunday was a real crap shoot as avalanche.ca was calling for the freezing level to rise to 1500 M. The gamble was the timing of the warming temperatures. We could have ended up with heavy rain and unskiable conditions from top to bottom for the whole morning. Often you can't tell until you're actually on the hill. One advantage of a Cypress report of rain at the bottom of the hill is that it scares the crowds away. This COVID season has had such brutal line-ups, particularly on a powder day, that it has been worth taking a chance when it shows rain at the bottom of the hill. The downside is that you may drive up there and find that it is so heavy and sticky that you wished you'd stayed in bed!!

Day 29 - Hate to rub it in ... but I will. Sweet snowboarding in 15 cm POW and excellent visibility with all the usual suspects. A little heavy but very plentiful everywhere for 1 hour before getting tracked out. Found my final stash of untracked on Midway (good for 4 more runs).

Had some nice turns with a few CM of fresh snow on smooth grooming. Lions opened at 8:50 AM and Eagle didn't get busy until 9:30. Almost no line-ups at Raven before 11 AM. Pretty good for a Sunday.

Day 30 - icy patches everywhere. Jasey Jay is the most tolerable. Just counting the minutes until poutine time.

Don't bother coming today
