Anybody in Vancouver Downwind SUP Foiling?

When there's absolutely no wind

Nice work, got it down!

Just need to get a bit more thrust of the first few pumps and you'll be able to keep up higher where the glide is more efficient and leaves some extra leeway for pumping/adjusting. I find the high aspect foils work well with a very firm, but short pumping pulse, with higher cadence to gain speed or height.

Last reading for Sunset Beach station was (402 is north, 403 is just across, 404 is by the bridge):
Station 402: 6/19/2024 12:57 Ecoli: 31 Salinity: 13.6
Station 403: 6/19/2024 13:10 Ecoli: 74 Salinity: 13.5
Station 404: 6/19/2024 13:24 Ecoli: 41 Salinity: 12.9

It would probably be good to avoid the water at the very least until the next sample is posted.

Here are latest false creek readings, I have a feeling that Station 20 is rather close to this leak and it's been leaking for a couple of days

Station 701 is just west of the pier
Station 605 is just east of the kayak / paddle board rental

Anything over 235 they investigate, over 400 they issue advisory.

Watch out, it seems Eagle Harbour has a case of Ecoli too!

Station 22 is pretty much right where you set up your ladder :(

Damn. Thanks for the heads up - was just having a coffee before going down there now I’m having second thoughts. That reading was taken 2hrs after I finished my session on Wednesday morning…

Maybe I’ll just start work early today…

Tried out Alice Lake docks yesterday:
- small area to pump in (okay if no swimmers are there)
- nice floating overhang that makes for easy handling with large span wings but it has bolts that stick out the bottom that will destroy your foil if it's not deep enough in the water
- both docks are quite high up, still doable but more challenging than Vanier
- the wood deck is old and very slippery
- the floating dock is constantly rotating every time you throw

Never noticed those bolts before! Don't think there are any on cat Lake docks, but also a similar height. While a bit harder to run from higher dock, it does give a bit of a height/potential energy advantage once pumping!

Have found that throwing some beach sand/gravel on the dock helps prevent full slip offs.

Ok screw it, tired of waiting for wind, Im in.
What is the best poor man option for beginner board? Drill 4 holes in wake board for the foil? kiteboard? Plywood with glass? Any cheap blanks you can buy to glass or carbon yourself? Any dimensions or suggestions would be amazing. Dmitri posted a website long ago that had super cheap blanks and supplies.
Let me know if anyone is going out around kits as I would like to tag along.
Cheers, Richi

It’s hard to beat the Gong Kluber at around $600 CAD. I love my 80 cm. If you are handy with epoxy glassing up a cedar board might be the best cheap option.

Tried out the ARTPRO 1401 on my buddies dock on Shawnigan Lake with a nice overhang. It’s crazy how little effort it takes to pump and how much effort it takes to turn.

If I didn’t have to swim back I’d like to see how far I could pump that thing in a straight line.

Nice job Slappy!

Rich, I'm still waiting for the e. coli numbers to drop from the two sewage main breaks. I expect to be back at the dock sometime next week, I can DM you when I know I'm going again.
