Weather Talk For BC no matter what you ride

Wave Board

Windsurfing shop talk

Hi all you windsurfers out there... What recommended size for Vancouver Island sessions and Pistol River...

Thinking of 92L Goya Quad... Seem like a good idea???

I have an 85L Goya One... So Freewave. Use that for Baja, Squam, Nitinat, Gorge. One board to rule them all lol.

Don't really want to get an 85L wave when I have the Freewave, even though it is not super "turney" on a wave so I understand.

Any thoughts welcome

Almost all my sessions at Long Beach have been on my 110L, pretty much always slog and ride. So for there get a board that you can slog and ride. Pistol is the complete opposite, almost all my sessions there have been on my 80L with a 4.3 or 3.7. How was your 85L when you sailed there?

Thanks all for replying... 100 plus litres sounds big and bargy? I weigh about 83kg in a wetsuit. I probably can float and ride ~95L with some falling in.

I only sailed a few times at Pistol on an 85L - got out, rode a few waves back, but no bottom turns, that is my next step. Not sure how good the Goya One will be, probably good enough for a beginner wave sailor

Don't want more than two wave boards, and may eventually replace my 85 Goya One after getting a larger wave board.

Michael, I hope you don't mind that I ask how much do you weigh?

I'm around 80kg. Sorry, my big board is actually 102L. It's been a while since I've been on it. I'm winging mostly at Long Beach now. Some of the new wave boards around a 100L are pretty sweet. It's all about being able to get through the break at Long Beach, even then, once you're out you need enough float to catch a wave with very little wind. If you can do it on a 95L then go for it.

I asked Morgan Noireaux once, he said body weight in kg plus 10 in liters for pistol. But add another few liters for less skill than Morgan. I'm 90 kg (94 with wetsuit and harness) and really like my Goya Quad 104 in anything from 12 knots slog and ride to about 24 knots. Stronger than that 93 l works well for me.

So two boards, bodyweigh plus 10 to 15 and bodyweight.

The modern (say 2022 or newer) larger wave boards perform really well for their size, highly recommeneded. The larger the board the more waves you'll catch, and you'll more likely be in the correct position. There is little downside, I'll happily give up a few degrees of turn for more waves.

Hi Ryan

I'm currently leaning towards the Goya Thruster Gen 4 which goes to 99L max. Which is just over 15L my wet weight, as it also is good for bump and jump and would work in Squamish.

In terms of waves, the only nearby opportunities are Vancouver Island and Pistol / Cape Sebastian. Maybe Centennial on a good SE when I am in Baja. So mostly I will get them through travel. So I'm conflicted...

Do you ever ride your Goya Quad in Squamish? I recall you ride a Fanatic Freestyle something like 106L if I recall correctly?

Finally, what board you taking to Peru? Maybe a 99 Thruster is a great travel board...
