'box' downhaul method

Windsurfing shop talk

by Randal » Wed Jun 11, 2014 9:34 am

Hi guys, someone on BWD was having trouble with their downhaul line being too hard to pull on. Since not everyone knows about the 'box method', I thought I'd post this link:

http://www.peconicpuffin.com/the_peconi ... nhaul.html

We teach people to do it this way at the club.

It works for most rigs, except that some manufacturers have now twisted the block 90 degrees to accommodate the more obvious (but less effective) way of rigging the sail.

Anyhow, maybe this will help a few people.

The box method is also specified by Hot, Sailworks, Chinook, etc.

Moral of the story: RTFM.

+1 on the Spectra. Pre-stretched Marlow lasted me 20 days max. Been on the same Spectra line for about 200 days now.

The blue-black prestretched Marlow which is packaged with Chinook downhauls et al. should be thrown away. It is garbage.

Spectra is produced by Honeywell, while Dyneema is produced by Avient. The two are functionally equivalent. Formuline is yet another variety. All three are the good stuff. Windsurfing downhauls use 4mm line.

Dirtymermaid sells 4mm Dyneema.

Randal provided a link for the box method when rigging with perpendicular pulley blocks, used for Chinook, Goya, etc.

But the link is busted, so here's another video.

Is there any advantage to using the box method vs just going from first to last pulley if the rope doesn’t overlap?

Using a Streamlined extension where the sail and extension pulley blocks are parallel.

So it’s just personal preference then?
