RDM and Chinook questions

Windsurfing shop talk

So I'm now a first time owner of an RDM mast, a No Limitz Sumo. There's a few things that I don't quite get. First of all, using this with a Chinook boom I would have thought I'd need to use the rdm adapter. As far as I can tell, there's no chance that the rdm adapter is big enough to fit this mast, which begs the question as to what this adapter is for. Without the adapter the fit seemed pretty roomy to me. Keep in mind that this (used) Chinook boom is new to me, my other boom is a 199x Windsurfing Hawaii. Maybe I'm just kind of dumb.

Next is the Chinook mast extension. The collar has four pins in it, and for the life of me I cannot get it seated into the extension. I have a SDM extension with a similar system with two pins which I don't have any problems with. This, however, is a b***h. I've only managed to get it seated once in 20 minutes of wrestling. Here is a photo showing how one side is seated and just how far the other pins have to go to be seated. I've also tried to slide it down so both sides of pins engage at the same time, to no avail. Surely there is a technique that makes this easy-ish.

The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask!...
The boom definitely requires the shim. It is designed to fit tightly on the mast so it won’t fit near the bottom of a mast; only up where you actually need it. Also, the shim must be snapped into the boom head before you attach the whole works to the mast. If it seems tight that is good; when you close the boom clamp it snaps the shim into place around the mast. To remove the boom, unclamp it, disengage the rope, and wiggle the boom off the mast.
I can’t give any tips for the base; don’t have that style.
Good that you’re sorting this stuff out at home, not when you’re trying to hit the water!

RDM mast will have to be forced into boom with shim. Yes, never ones takes some force.

The extension doesn't make sense. You said "4 pins". It should only have 2 pins. Maybe I am not understanding the question. Here is a video with how the system works.

My collar has 4 pins as seen below. Since my first post I've managed to get it seated twice. Just moving it around and it snapped into place, but I haven't figured out how to do this repeatably.

Sorry about the confusion. I just checked mine and it has 4 pins. I assumed it was only 2. It is the simplest system. The video explains it. You push up the collar out of the way (push up). Now you have the 4 pin clamp. Use only your thumb to expand the clamp (4 pins). Don't use both hands or try to pry it apart. Use the thumb and it will pop out. Then with your thumb just push up and push in the correct hole. I hope that makes sense. I know that you think you will break the 4 pin clamp - you will not. The Bigwinds video explains it well.

It also has the clamping for the RDM mast. I do that the same way to get it in the boom.

Thanks. I kept working it and slowly the pins starting popping in and out. Once I had set it about 10 times it starting working as expected. Those first 4 or 5 times were really tough, and yes, I was afraid I was going to snap the plastic.
