Rope Eye Splice

Several weeks ago at the Spit my flag out line snapped where it attaches to my kite leash.

Today replaced it with 3/16" Amsteel Blue / Dyneema (from Donaldson Ropes in North Van) which is overkill.

I terminated the ends with the Möbius Brummel eye splice ... best of all no lock stitch is required.

Very interesting video on splicing. For those of us splicing narrower dimension material (9/64 Amsteel bridal lines) a great source for fids are the 3.75 and 4 mm Hiya Hiya hollow stainless knitting needles which can be cut and sanded on a 45 degree angle to accept the Amsteel. They work beautifully and a package of 4 cost around 10.00 dollars.

I actually spliced without a fid.

Instead after I taper the line, I temporarily wrap it with masking tape before burying it ... then I remove the masking tape before milking the line.

As we patiently wait for our next session this is a good time for gear maintenance. What better way to pass the time than with some DIY hardcore rope porn.

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to test the Möbius Brummel eye splice under load when Bill and I flagged out, self-rescued and packed up. It worked like a charm.

The other day, I talked to Donaldson Rope and they don't believe the Möbius Brummel eye splice is stronger. Instead they follow the rope vendors instructions and normally use a lock stitch. Donaldson Rope makes big ass eye splices for mooring huge ships.

If you want super duper strength, consider using the Möbius Brummel eye splice PLUS securing the buried end with a lock stitch.

BTW - in the past, I've used dental floss for the lock stitch because it's UV resistant. Learned this from surfers repairing their wetsuits.

An alternative to dental floss for a lock stitch is whipping twine which is available in a variety of thicknesses.......Happy stitching!

I was gonna add, I do add a dental floss lock stitch. It won’t come undone under load, but can get ugly when your bar is unloaded eg: wrapping up/banged around in your car.
