What is your most used board in lower mainland?

Years on and I’m still dying to get new board. I’ve managed to update my sails and masts, so that’s good.

I weigh 66kg and I thought I should get a 100 L ish board for 4.0 to 5.5 - I get worried about wind dropping and current carrying me out to the sound (what can I say, I grew up sailing on lakes and rivers). On the other hand, when the wind is 20-28kn I don’t really want to be on a 100 L board. So I’m trying to figure out where to put my money. Sub 80L, 85L, 95L. I may also try to find a used 2nd board that covers 15-18kn. I can get a new fanatic 85L FSW for $1400 which might be a bit big for 4.0 sailing but helps through lulls on 5.0.

So how big is your most used board and what do you weigh?

Get one you can uphaul easily and one for your sweet spot of 3.5-5.0
Consider whether you want to also foil with the larger. There are now several foils designed for ~100L freestyle/FSW boards.

I have a Seatrend 104L accelerator which is fast but I’m terrible at gybing with it, and the board is too big when it gets over 22knots or so. I also have a Seatrend 75L ATV which I haven’t used since returning to sailing because I’m always worried about getting back in if the wind dies. I recall the atv being fun but in hindsight it’s probably not great at planing through lulls when I’m on a 4.5+.

The 104L is also pretty unstable imo, I’ve never been able to uphaul it so it’s not working for me as a lighter wind board either.

I am 140 lbs (63 KG). At Locarno I sail a 114L Futura with a 7.5 Retro 90% of the time. On light days I would prefer a bigger board in the 122-135 range. My biggest sail is an 8.6 NX and is a bit too big for the 114. On really good days (maybe 1 out of 6 sessions) I drop to my 94L Kode FSW and 6.0 Retro.

I forgot to ask what your biggest sail is, which places you sail from and if you go year round.

How often do you hope to be sailing? Some people might say their 75L board is their most used board in the Lower Mainland, but they may only sail three super good days a year locally. I now windfoil exclusively with one board in total, but when I used to fin sail year round at about your weight I would have a 135L slalom board and an 85L freestyle/wave board. The 85 would be the go-to for Squamish/Nitinat and the good days locally, the 135L was for all the other super marginal local days, it could theoretically work in anything no matter how light. I don't think I could ever have been happy with just one board. I like the idea of having two "meh" boards instead of one nice board I can only use sometimes locally.

I'm 68kg and using 85L board with preferred sails 3.7 and 4.7.
4.7 most used in Squamish and 3.7 when it's gusting to 30-35kn for BB and Gorge days.
Can uphaul on it but it's not very easy.

My largest sail is a 6.5 retro. I live in east van and sail in English Bay a few times (needs that magical combination of free time and wind) and have been sailing in Squamish although I’ve been really busy the last two summers with family commitments.

I’ve never sailed boundary bay, I’d need a new wetsuit for colder weather.

Thanks for everyone’s input I’m getting more confident that a 85L is the way to go and I really like that idea of also getting a 115-120L that would also be foilable. Unfortunately my bank account says otherwise.

I’d actually be super happy if I was able to regularly plane at English Bay with the 6.5. I’d also entertain getting a slightly bigger sail. Years ago I actually thought that they 104L seatrend + 6.5 would do that for me, but that didn’t work out.
