Jericho/Locarno was absolutely NUKIN' today!! This is the windiest I've ever seen it at Locarno since I started windsurfing 5 years ago. I started today on a 6.0 around 12:00ish. A couple runs and the 6.0 was clearly too much. Came in and re-rigged 5.0. Went back out and after a couple runs the wind totally lit up. Completely over powered again on the 5.0. I had a 4.0 and 3.6 with me but unfortunately didn't bring the masts. Argh...Today was a day you maybe get once a year.

Bait and switch. The graph at Jericho showing 25 gusting 30 with 33-degree temps in Burnaby was too hard to ignore. Frustrating drive into the city with 1st Ave closed for construction, 4th Ave closed for firefighting/flooding, trees dancing around and traffic crawling. Caught a glimpse of the water off Kits and it was on. Passed dust clouds of sands at Jericho only to find Acadia glassy on the inside and JoeBlo reporting you had to go out, way out to the channel and only then was it cranking. Walked up to the Upper Acadia and it was light (really light too). Watched Richard work it and he almost drew me out but the graph at Jericho rebounding to 25, gusting 30 had me drive down for a look-see. I told Joe that's where I was headed, but said "Not likely going out.", as I am not a big fan of the chop and reflective wave (off the pier) there.

Well, I was wrong - guy from NV stepping off the water into a sand cloud with a sub-90 litre board and 5.0 saying he was overpowered. Out I went on 5.3/115 and sailed with a transplanted JoeBlo and Francis (WS foil) and some of the others. Overheard a kiter say, "That was fun, I think." Even though it was about 25 at the beach there must have been some type of a bubble causing the wind to doom at Acadia. Odd day. Fun getting wet while rush hour traffic passed us by.

How do you find windfoiling vs. kitefoiling?

It's way easier to go from windsurfing to windfoiling than kiteboarding to kitefoiling. With that said though, it's still challenging. I've been out probably 5 times windfoiling this summer and feel like I'm already better than I am at kitefoiling after maybe 25 to 30 sessions. I think part of this though may be due to all the kitefoiling experience I had already, it certainly seemed to transfer over to windfoiling. While it looks pretty boring in the footage, it takes a ton of concentration just to go in a straight line and going "fast" can be freaky at first. One of the best things about it is that because of the big board I can always schlog back to shore in virtually zero wind if it shuts down as opposed to doing a huge swim with the kite.
