Board for new sailor?

Windsurfing shop talk

by morrison » Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:15 am

Sailor weighs 105lbs
Target wind is zero to 18 knots for now.
Weight is factor for getting board on/off car etc.. Daggerboard required. Casual paddling planned.
thinking either JP 10'9" windsup or JP 165l explorer.
Any thoughts?

Maybe one of the starboards with a center fin box? I think they make a few youth models that have them.

Or a Kona surf 170 if you really want to focus on <10kts.

Hey Morrison,

I have some Starboard WindSUP options that could be good. Shoot me an email if you want to discuss further: adrien@tridentsports.com

Thanks,

I have a starboard go. It does not have a daggerboard but all my kids learned on it. I forget the year but it is in very good shape. I measure it at 280 long 83 wide and am guessing about 165 l. Might work for you

If it is for you kid u may not want a beginner specific rig. But instead something that u can both use.
I bought a Quatro Carve SUP 110L (tons of volume for 100 lbs).
U can plug and play a 2m sail or 5m . I wind sup it strapless and sup it on the coast. And my 6 yr old is learning to windsurf on it. So serves dual fxn (less to carry). Also, it is super light. If u travel by plane a lot then inflatable. If not, then light modern construction gives much better perfomance and lower weight. Good luck!
