PFDs I definitely understand: we're out there in deep water and can sometimes get separated from gear. To each their own, I suppose.
very true my friend , until a few years ago , I never had a helmet and I should have , especially after passing out on my board in 1999 oops...
I wear mine in "challenging" conditions , big swell , not great viz, or with numerous sailors around like the hatchery , where fins literally fly near you all the time !
Helmets help, ask Francis , a few years ago Caro's mast hit the poor guy in the head after a failed beach start ....
