Tuesday dawn patrol

When there's absolutely no wind

by keeldude » Mon May 28, 2018 1:03 pm

slight upgrade, south of nanaimo: Wind increasing to northwest 25 to 30kn after midnight then diminishing to westerly 15 to 20 Tuesday afternoon. Tide 4.2m@0530, will be perfect for WB after 0630, but i'll probably show up early for hopefully a free parking spot

I should be on the water at locarno for 11am. I hope there's enough wind remaining to do another 94l, 6.0 day like last session there. Last session was one of the best I've ever had at locarno.

A bit of a let down today. Nice waves on offer but not enough wind to ride them. I should have gone surfing instead. I could have actually paddled in to the waves at the 2nd dolphin if I had my longboard.

With the Fraser flooding it's pushing so much water around in to Vancouver there was no salt water to be had today, pure nasty Fraser river water all the way to Jericho.

I notice the water as well, not salty.

WB was good 6:45am-7:45am (tide 12-10ft). Nice rides, but you have to move around as break moves with tide and sand banks (5 surfers in total).
Slappy, next time, get the best waves (according to tide) at WB and kite after.

You can tell when white caps start getting into the inlet from WB, after those stairs may want to take a 15 min nap.

10am-11am wind was 16-22knots.

S2 - Long Beach – wavesailing (2018 May 28)

Image
Sea Otters. Wind was on early (blowing sand on the beach upon arrival). Nelson Matt was first to take to the water (first session wavesailing ground swell ever and he did well). Myself, BWD and Udder followed. Early waves were clean, soft and open. Shared a very memorable party wave with Udder - team orange was all smiles! Saw what I thought was a seal swimming on his back (turned out to be a Sea Otter - happy creature enjoying the sun and waves). DavidM, Hiyosilver, Tsawwassen, Redbaron, and BFD joined in for the peak of the wind. Felt a bit like Bandon with some Cape-like gusts on the outside at times. Sized down to 4.5/92 when I bounced out of bottom turns on two consecutive waves (and then got folded and washed). Lots of rides on offer. Wind was so strong it was slamming van doors in Lot 5. One mast broken (Nelson Matt) and one sail damaged (Hiyosilver) - small offerings for great sessions. Tales and ales, and lots of laughter shared by all the Sea Otters over dinner at Jamie’s and record crowd at the second spur. Even saw the glass bottle cabin.

S3 - Long Beach – wavesailing (2018 May 29)

Seconds. Second day on the Oregon coast or at least that’s what it felt like. Got to play in the ‘adult pool’ today. Big crew again today plus Riley and Brass Munkey. First out on SUP, wind-SUP, then windsurf (now I know how Matt felt yesterday – solo session). Some memorable early catches (jibes on the face) including a growler of a left that impressed surfer, mid-session bomb, and a few clean rights near Lovekin. Gusty but I’ll gladly take it. Hung onto the big gear all day today. Cedars, then photo editing at the laundromat. Good times!

C36, I think you may have a permanent address at LB. May, June best months in Tofino...clear water, clean and glassy, better waves that other months, without being too cold.
WB had nice waves yesterday.
I have to ask you a few questions about la Ventana when I see you.

Thanks for the great pictures as usual Dave. That was an awesome trip! Party wave was a great way to finish things off.

A few moments captured on the gopro.
