Let's talk about foiling

Windsurfing shop talk

So I recently acquired a Foil , which took a while because
1 I needed to save money for it
2 they are moderate to expensive toys, so I wanted to make damn sure I chose the right one.
I am starboard addict so I directed my attention towards their foil lineup, and after talking to the local experts and other salesmen, I decided to try the starboard freeride , with 75 cm aluminum mast.
A friend of mine sold me his 2010 isonic 121 carbon so I thought , eh why not !
Oh boy I was not disappointed at all , it seemed like this board and this foil were made for each other, my previous experience was with the slingshot foil + board combo, and my setup is wayyyyy easier to use than the latter.
Concerns were about the top speed of the freeride foil , well after seeing Caro last saturday blasting through Nexen full speed on the 5.5 , I have no concerns anymore , there is plenty of speed for newbies like us to play around.

So here you go folks, Isonics work great for foiling as they are short and wide and take off very quick , so the power is transferred to the foil quickly too.
The freeride foil offers a safe flight and easy control and a very decent top speed.

Also Alton can we get a FOIL category to post foil stuff ?

cheers

I wonder how the old Hypersonics would be with a foil?

Nope. Too small a category to be worthwhile.

Pretty good although the very short length isn't forgiving.

Really any board over 75cm wide works fairly well although wider is better. Some foils (Naish, Slingshot) prefer a board on the narrow side while others like wider. It will also depend on how you sail it. Upright with smaller sails: narrow, hiked out with big ones: wide.

you have a surf sup category that people barely use....
I don t see the disadvantage of having an extra category.
Foiling is getting huge !

myself i don't oppose the foil category but i do want to point out that the sup and surfing section technically has more posts than kiteboarding ;) waves in the strait have been a bit depressing lately so we don't talk much, other than C36's recent island scores :)

This kind of behaviour is not acceptable ... as such Alton has been temporarily banned from WTFBC
