Squamish spit TC consultation

Off Topic Comments, Help, Tips and Trick

Spit removal needs to get Transport Canada approval under Navigable Waters Act. They've recently added more details to their application, it was a complete joke before that. The comment period is almost over now, if you haven't yet, please take a few minutes to register your concerns.

This consultation is specifically about water navigation, which does include recreational users such kiteboarders and windsurfers. We are the most numerous marine users of this area and deserve to be heard, no matter how much effort SRWS and the District put into their removal-is-a-done-deal narrative.

The main water navigation concerns that I see are:
- Elimination of safe sailing area that is free of current, river swell, and woody debris (submerged hazards and kite line tangle hazard)
- Effective elimination of SWS and thus their rescue service, while no government agency is able to field several rescue calls per day in this area (SWS may be gone but people will keep try to sail there)
- Leaving exposed rocks above grade causing submerged hazards
- Lack of studies on the increased erosion of the spit island caused by removal of the spit section
- Elimination of safe docking area for SWS rescue watercraft

In case you missed the SWS webinar with the context for this, see here: https://vimeo.com/592898157

EDIT: it appears that the comment period has been extended now. Make good use of it!
