Severne S-1 Underperforming -> Mast?

Hi All,

I rigged my Severne S-1 in Squamish today after a few hours with a North Super Session and couldn't help but notice that it felt odd.

Some symptoms are: I couldn't go upwind as easily. My arms were tired because it didn't feel as stable and I had to adjust it all the time.

The sail was rigged to spec, but not on a Severne mast. Back when I bought it I checked that Severne RDM is close to constant curve and just went with that not knowing it could make such a radical difference. I used my Chinook 90% mast instead, which is a constant curve.

Has anybody tried using severne sails without the severne mast?

As a random though - perhaps somebody has a severne 400 mast I could try that sail with? Of course, if I break it, I'll buy new.

Severn RDMs are on the border of being hard top, Chinook RDMs are definitely on the flex top side.

I think that sail will be going on for sale shortly. I would like to stick to one type of bend curve and not have more than one mast of a given length.

I rig sailworks on my Chinook C90 and it's good. HSM and NP both rigged very well.

I've got both 370 and 400 Chinook masts. I've used the 370 top on the 400 bottom for a little more flex very successfully. Perhaps the opposite could be done?

I use a S1 4.2 with my Fiberspar 90% mast and it feels awesome.
No issues.
It needs to break in if it is brand new and should feel better as it does.
What size is it? Which board are u using? How heavy r u?
There r a lot of variables to take into consideration and not just the mast.
I would say it is not a great sail for Squamish, but better on the coast in waves or Gorge.

It's a 5.6 m2 2017 S-1, which rigs on a 400 mast + 30cm extension. I'm 77-78 kg. I use a 105 Fanatic Freewave STB (2019).

I agree in that using a wave sail of that size in Squamish is sub-ideal. A crossover/freeride sail would work better.

I did some further investigation: as I add downhaul when rigging it, by the time the 3rd batten gets in front of the mast, the leech is already way past the maximum point. To me this truly feels like an incompatible mast and it makes sense since Severne RDM is hard-top.

I couldn't find bend curve info for the Fiberspar mast.

I've made the decision to sell that sail, potentially in favour of Duotone SuperSession of the same size. The S-1 in amazing condition and has seen very little use.

Geez that really sucks and I am sorry to hear u r not happy with an S1.
Seems like u have a super lightwind wave setup at your weight using a Stubby and S1 combo.
Before I ask u how much u want for the the S1, why don't u try to rig it fuller and run 3 battens? U might just like the feel with the Stubby.

The sail is great, the rest of my gear is just not compatible with it.

It's not a Stubby, but rather a Freewave STB (they rounded the front slightly for 2020). It's my bigger freeride/bump and jump board for sails 6.5m2 down to 4.8m2. For stronger winds I use an 82L FSW. I chose the 105 over 95 so I could uphaul if I needed to.

I tried rigging it fuller, but it felt even worse with the mast that I have.

I purchased it for about $CAD 450 (it was a demo unit), sailed it 5 times max, kept in a dry place. Will happily let go of it for $CAD 250. The sail is in A/A- condition. No damage, no repairs.
