WTFBC Registrations

Off Topic Comments, Help, Tips and Trick

by Alton » Sun Nov 11, 2018 11:27 am

I've been swamped at work this year so I've had a backlog of new member registrations since Jan 2018. If you know anyone waiting for their account to be activated please PM their email to me.

WTFBC currently gets from 100 to 200 registrations (globally) per day from spammers and bots. Consequently, I was too busy and let them lapse. I now have a new process for reviewing/approving registrations.

1. Filter IP address to get new registrations from Canada only.
2. Ignore email addresses, usernames or ISP that look suspicious
3. Physically email non-suspicious registrations asking them why they want to join WTFBC
4. Activate new registrations with valid email responses

After reviewing 200 lapsed Canadian registrations from Jan 2018 to present, only 1% were valid.

Wow Alton, what a pain dealing with all the bogus registration requests!!! Thanks so much for maintaining the “clean” wind-and-water-sports-only site for all of our benefits. It would be much more difficult to sail locally (especially in the fall and winter!) without the networking we do through wtfbc!! I personally wouldn’t sail in cold weather without knowing that I won’t be sailing alone. The OSR tool is super helpful too.
Much appreciated,
Brian

I also really enjoy this site - I appreciate everything about it.
I can remember what it was like before it came along & would like to say that it's the best thing ever for us local sailors.
Thank you very much Alton

Alton, website I know are being hit non-stop nowadays from other countries. I wouldn't be surprised if WTF one day turns into a nude site because you forgot to pay/renew your site name. PM is a good idea.

0 windsurf sessions for myself this year... but I had 200 work sessions.

SE Wed morning, but looks mild.

Hey Alton!!

I also would like to congratulate you on offering such a great platform and as Brian C indicated, I would not windsurf in winter without reading all the posts and hearing the useful OSR. Keep up the good work :D :D

No worries. The new process for reviewing new registrations is minimal work.

The only downside is our friends in Washington state will be ignored. Also, I normally miss Canadians who VPN into their head office in Seattle.

Alton,
Without this site I would not be enjoying my midlife crisis! It has connected me with local surfers that I did not know existed and taught me to enjoy this new hobbie here in my backyard.
Keep up the good work. It is worth it for so many of us!!

I decided to check registrations from Washington state which is not as arduous as I assumed.
