Lake Mohave (Las Vegas) Trip Report

Turned a weekend in Vegas to a 4 day trip so I could spend a couple days kiting Lake Mohave. It was quite nice to have 35 degree air and 20 degree water for a change.

Both days were south winds so we hit up Six Mile Cove. It's about a 1.5 hour drive from Vegas with the last 20 minutes on gravel (much nicer than the spit road though). The wind wasn't idea and the locals kept saying how this wasn't usual for the spot but we still made it work. A lot of the locals seem really picky about wind. It's a bit of a sketchy launch because dust devils blow through and there was a fatality there a few years ago.

You drive right on to the beach but be aware that this spot gets very crowded with kids and beach goers on weekends. These photos are a Friday. The beach is pebble on shore with sand at the water line and a rocky point you might end up walking in on. Most people there carry shoes with them just in case.

The readings from Lake Mohave Buoy North seemed a bit off the actual conditions, even though we were riding 300m away from the buoy. First day was about 20g30 and the next felt like 25g40. Rode the 12m and 9m fist day but it was 7m or smaller on the next.

It's typical lake conditions, reminded me a lot of Nicola. Mostly just chop but in 7m conditions there was a bit of thigh high swell.

Took my surfboard via WestJet and they only charged me $25 each way for a bag big enough to hold a dead body (but under 50 lbs). They didn't even ask what was inside.

Super cool I needed another reason to go back to Sin City. Haven't been since my bachelor party. :D

Oh I forgot to mention that there was a windsurfer there on the 25g40 day that was planing well. You can back your truck right up to the lake so you only have to haul that gear 10 feet.
