I'm intrigued by the North American trend to wear helmets for windsurfing. In the 11 years I've been doing the sport, I've only ever had 1 head injury (broken nose), and in that case the style of helmet most choose to wear wouldn't have helped anyways... I don't think I've ever seen a French windsurfer wear a helmet (except maybe Greg!) Maybe we care more about style points..

PFDs I definitely understand: we're out there in deep water and can sometimes get separated from gear. To each their own, I suppose.

While I never wear a helmet kiting unless riding my foilboard I would wear one windsurfing for the same reason I wear one with the foilboard:

Chance of getting knocked unconscious.

I have a Sweet (whitewater helmut brand) that i wear for protection but mostly the brim. It is like a baseball hat.
No pfd. Other than flotation from wetsuit and harness.

very true my friend , until a few years ago , I never had a helmet and I should have , especially after passing out on my board in 1999 oops...
I wear mine in "challenging" conditions , big swell , not great viz, or with numerous sailors around like the hatchery , where fins literally fly near you all the time !
Helmets help, ask Francis , a few years ago Caro's mast hit the poor guy in the head after a failed beach start ....
