Weather Talk For BC no matter what you ride

Cypress 2016/17

When it's absolutely too cold

by Alton » Fri Jan 20, 2017 4:14 pm

Day 32 - Beautiful sunny day at Cypress. As expected crusty snow and hard pack (icy) groomers made it challenging for snowboarders. A few awesome runs included Jasey Jay (3 cm of fresh), Shoreline (5cm before joining hard pack at lower Benny's), Humpty Dumpty and Sky Chair (soft dry snow). Fun riding with Marc, Rob F and LeopardSkin (who were unfortunately snowboarding). Good turn out including Doug, Rob W, Clay, Jerry, Bill, Alan, Brian and Mokka (all on skis).

Looking forward to more sunny sessions next week.

Thanks for the tips on the conditions at lunch. Mokka, Al K and I stayed on Sky Chair and Lions Chair and had a really good afternoon. Views were awesome with the mix of sun and cloud over the Georgia Straight. As recommended, the snow was best on Sky Chair but Humpty Dumpty, Gibsons, and Cat Track were in great shape too. The bottom of Rainbow was firm but the rest of Lion's groomers were good. Overall it was a much bettter afternoon than we expected after two warm and wet days.

Skipped out of work early to catch a fun session this afternoon. Spent most of the time on the sky chair and B hip. The snow was much better than I was expecting at the higher elevations. I had thoughts of going to baker but decided not to but wish I did, 50cm in 24 hours, maybe next time.

Day 33 - Yet another beautiful sunny day on Cypress. Switched to snowboarding for a change. Fun riding with LeopardSkin, Rob F, Marc B and Bandito. Groomers were soft enough to make snowboarding enjoyable - Humpty Dumpty, Jasey Jay and Benny's (fresh at top) were my favourite. Ungroomed runs (Crazy Raven, Coyote 7 and Sky in the trees) were soft but lumpy. Skiers included Brian, Mokka, Rob W, Clay, Jerry and Doug.

No new snow forecasted so I'll be switching back to skiing the rest of the week.

One of the few benefits of riding in the afternoon.

Day 34 - Foggy morning at Cypress. Manageable visibility from top to bottom of Lions but dangerously thick on Eagle. Sky Chair opened with plenty of sunshine so my routine was from top of Sky Chair to bottom of Lions via Humpty Dumpty, Horizon and the bypass (5 minutes down / 15 minutes up). Grooming is finally getting better.

Didn't recognize any slackers today but nice to bump into Kato in the parking lot when I was leaving. Hope we can ride together soon.

Looks like an inversion going on. Was it warm up there today?
