Cypress 2016/17

When it's absolutely too cold

by Young » Wed Mar 15, 2017 4:03 pm

I think biggest snow year was 98-99 by a huge margin. I recall lotsa trees being buried opening up more lines. Can anybody else confirm?

Yes, 98/99 was the year Mount Baker set the world record receiving about 100 feet of snow. Cypress was not too far behind. Ski patrol had a lot of work to do digging pits out around the lift footings on Sky chair to keep them from being toppled by the downhill pressure of the deep snow base.

I also remember skiing at Baker that year. You could ski straight onto the Chair 1 midstation loading platform when normally it was a 15-20 foot climb.

Another fine day on the mountain. Did the mid-shift from 11-3 with a friend who likes to sleep in. Still no lineups and plenty of parking in the main lot. Best snow was up top on Tomcat etc and Top Gun was still very good. About 10 cm new up top but only a few cm at the bottom of Raven Ridge. A few firm patches on lower runs.
Much better than Wed and it was snowing again when we left.

Day 60 - Delayed by a call, slapped on my skis to catch up with Rob W, Jerry, Clay and Doug but never crossed paths so skied solo pumping my tunes. 5 cm of fresh over Shoreline, Crazy Raven and Coyote 7. Jasey Jay and Maeller Ricker was surprisingly icy. Joined Benito on the Sky Chair for some soft grippy groomers then lunch with Marc and Rob F.

Skiing today was better than expected . first rides on horizon with 4 cm of fresh on top of a groomed soft base. The 10 cm of heavy fresh on raven was best for fat skis and snowboarders. Cannot comment on skychair since it did not open till after 11am.

sky chair open round 1130,was good wt ice crust of 1/2 or less inch breakable wt my snowboard , not many people. by 2-3pm ice crust was like 1 inch in woods, I gave up as I was not able to do cutbacks. was even cold west wind in woods! until it get soften wt rain or 6+cm fresh,i wouldn't recommend off tracks skiing/snowboarding.

Look like Wednesday SE Winds and snow are visiting us. If you didn't see it yet, Rogue One is the best Starwars episode since Empire Strike Back :)

Day 61 - Too sore for Cypress when I woke up but some extra strength Advil changed that. Smooth but hard groomers at opening except for Coyote 7 - favorite run soft and grippy. After we tracked out Coyote 7, it became chunky but other runs softened. Snowboarded with Tony/LeopardSkin until lunch time at 11:30. Good turn out with Tony, Bob, Rob W, Chris, Gary, Patrick and Roy.

Even bigger turn out at the Crazy Raven Pub with Tony, AJ, Gary, Patrick, Roy, Rob, Dave ... and 4 other skiers. Funny how we spent more time in the pub than on the hill ... good times :D

Day 62 - managed to pinch out another snowboarding session before heavy rain starts tomorrow. Explored most runs with Marc, Rob F and Doug. Generally good smooth corduroy for carving. Favorites were Sky Chair, Humpty Dumpty, Jasey Jay - especially exciting coming down on Maelle Ricker and Ashley McIver ;)

Moved snowboard bindings back 1 cm towards the heel edge for more heel side grip ... actually works.
