Weather Talk For BC no matter what you ride

Cypress 2016/17

When it's absolutely too cold

by ShonanDB » Thu Mar 09, 2017 6:27 pm

Skied 4000m of vertical (14 runs) in 2 hours starting from skier's left on SkyChair and working my way all the way across to Raven Ridge. Best snow was in the Raven Ridge area and finished off with some fast passes on the groomers hitting a top speed of 72km. (Sports Tracker App). Connected with a Lifty on a snowboard for a few runs in the trees and did some exploring myself so overall, had a good short but sweet session.

Watched Frozen (2010) on my return flight from Ottawa. Actually a pretty good film.
Got me so freaked out I'm going to stop skiing/snowboarding for a while.

ha ha , I saw that one, a must see for skier/snowboarder. For me, it made me think often how I would get out of this predicament : jump if not too high, use a jacket or something attached to me n zip down the next pilon and walk down ladder...

Day 58 - To overcome my recent fear of chair lifts (Frozen 2010) and make up for my pathetic kitesurfing session yesterday, I decided to snowboard Cypress this morning.

Foggy with wet snow surprised to find Rob W and Clay. Better than expected conditions (soft grippy corduroy) for awesome carving. Had to squeegy my goggles half way down each run. Alternated between Humpty Dumpty, Maelle Ricker and Crazy Raven for best visibility.

2 hours on Cypress - great way to celebrate daylight saving time.

Day 59 - Desperately needed some exercise so went for some civilized turns (skiing) at Cypress. Only groomed runs were Humpty Dumpty, Horizon, Maelle Ricker, Panorama Windjammer and Crazy Raven. Lions runs were firm so stayed on the Eagle and Raven chairs. Fog was very thin so visibility was good. Soft grippy corduroy made for some awesome carving conditions.

Haven't been on skis for a couple of months so had to work out some new muscles. Still lots of fun (riding with tunes) even without any familiar faces.

Saw your car but not you Alton. In the lodge now after a better-than-expected morning of snowboarding. As you noted, only the groomers were good, but they had a nice soft coat of spring snow. Crazy Raven was my favourite on the board, with Humpty Dumpty a close second. A few light showers came through after 1130 but the light has been fine. No crowds either.

So has this been the best local season since 92/93? Or even since 81/82?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my sample size this season is a lot smaller than Alton's, and I can't speak for conditions at Cypress, but from what I have seen at Seymour it was definitely better than 14/15, but I don't think you have to go back that far to get a comparable or even better season for POW days (12/13 comes to mind).
