Suggestions for best break location for SupSurfing? Going to get 2 sessions Saturday and one Sunday morning.

Staying Cox Bay

  • The good news is Pacific Rim (Tofino-Ukee) offers lots of options - the bad news is it can make it harder to choose as conditions can vary greatly day-to-day even hour-to-hour.
  • There are some general observations here that ring true from what I have seen. Not listed are Long Beach (dial-a-wave conditions - smaller north and larger south Incinerator Rock) and Wickaninnish Beach (in the cove at the south end right outside the visitors' centre) which can also offer up great SUP conditions, but they are further away from where you are staying.
  • June will likely offer up some smaller summer swell.
  • If you are staying at Cox Bay its worth a look/try for sure, but it can be a volatile/difficult spot (as different swells can converge creating 'concentrated' conditions).
  • Check out the surfcams (make sure to check the date stamps on the images to make sure they are 'fresh').
  • Ask for "pick of the day" at the local surf shops (their suggestion will likely be 'busy' with schools and/or rentals).
Hope this is of some use to you. Enjoy the trip!

Maybe some surf at WB2 if over 0.8m, very early morning (5am), 13 ft tide, has to be over 0.8m+HB to work.

Trying Westport OR, tomorrow Sat, as no surf for the next 10 days around here.

Day one Tofino. Arrived 5:30, went straight out from Pacific Sands at Cox Bay. Chest to head high with short breaks between. A little humbling on my 9'2 Nugg but caught a few in a short session. Tomorrow Cox in am and Chesterman pm session.

Groins, a nice break far away, but strong current, got a few there.
Jetty, made it all the way outside, got a big one and call it a day.

Jetty usually has a conveyor belt rip right by the rocks. Almost no effort to get out even when it's huge.

Tofino report.
Best conditions were Cox Bay this weekend. Went to North Chesterman Saturday afternoon and was dead, barely 2ft. Cox Bay was producing all weekend and with the Vans Ducttape festival it was crowded. Sup surfed 4 sessions, now old man tired!
Thanks for the help all!

For today, 12.5 ft tide at 0.8mHB, the only place that would work is to the right of the UBC spit to catch a few waves right now (a wedge forms there). Only a few people would know where to go... Keelan is away, it's a no time for me.

Last Saturday at Westport, not worth the time. Groins is such a small place to catch waves, rides are short, and when you go farther out (where there was a nice break) ther is a strong current, you'll have to constantly paddle to stay in one place. @ Jetty, I started not far from it, then drifted 300 meters to the left in 25 minutes... in a 3 hour session, you'll drift 2km away (it was NW wind&swell). Aberdeen, etc, all ghost towns due to the military moving away a few decades ago (eerie, zombieland). Skip it.

Thursday SE@PR looking better now:

Upgraded, peak at 11am now... and better tide (11-8ft). Looks like 5ft+

Hello. First post. Found this about a month or so ago and it took a while to work through this thread. Thanks for all the info!

Question, I'm trying to better understand the different forecast models. Windy now defaults to ECMWF. The post above seems to be NAMS. As far as I know ECMWF is really expensive. That alone obviously doesn't make it good, but the fact that Windy would pay for it and default to it is interesting. I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on the relative accuracy/precision between these models. (GFS never gives me what I want so I hope it's wrong!)

For instance, in the comparison below (hopefully posted picture correctly), ECMWF has the wind peaking in the evening. NAMS in the middle of the day. Seems like it's the difference between office dwellers showing up at the right time, or just in time to see people with flexible schedules leaving the water :)

Thanks!

edit: spelling
