Whidbey Island Monday

When there's absolutely no wind

by keeldude » Sun Apr 03, 2016 11:31 am

I have been meaning to give Whidbey a shot but the 2.5hr drive has always been the main deterrent. Westerly 25-35knots is forecast all day for the JDF strait tomorrow so I'm guessing there will be waves all up and down the island. Not sure what the tides do for the breaks but if there's enough swell it may not matter. I've heard that a big ocean swell will actually make it down here but with tomorrow's forecast of 8'@9sec I would only count on the local windswell.

Sounds good. If it's blowing 25-35 down the strait through the night, and persists through Monday as forecast, I think there will be lots of wind/waves and surf to be enjoyed.
On standby for a road trip.

Looks good in the morning. I was going to check it last week when coming back from Seattle, if a good break. Faceplant posted a few photos and it looks decent. It's a drive. Working tomorrow, can't make it.
Also SW in the afternoon looks mild locally.

This is where I saw a bunch of locals surfing once when there was some swell coming down the straight. It's just down the road from where the windsurf, kite launch is.

This is supposed to be a good break too but I've never been there.

Couple of cautions about Whidbey Island.
  • West wind at Whidbey Island is hard to hit
  • Easter Sunday forecast looked solid, but tommorrow's forecast (for sailing) looks spotty to my eye
  • I'm scheduled to have the day off, but don't expect to be on WI tomorrow
  • If you are going down for surf, dawn looks to be about best chance of wind swell to my eye
  • Looks to be a mid-tide at dawn, high at 2 pm and 1' low at 8 pm

If you go, hope I am proved wrong.

Tides (my guesses for West Beach/JWSP)
04/04 Mon 03:00 AM 6.74 H (shore pound and strong current)
04/04 Mon 08:09 AM 3.34 L (moderate shore pound and moderate current)
04/04 Mon 02:10 PM 5.85 H (shore pound and strong current)
04/04 Mon 08:04 PM 0.73 L (easy launch and break/tricky wave at the edge of the bank)

/edit: tide comments added

Looks great for early am until early afternoon for WSW 20-30mph winds. TAF, Local, Marine, EC and pressure slope all showing somewhere between high teens and 30mph for most of the day. Check the actuals early am. If it isn't pumping I'd be leary of the drive as the strongest winds usually occur within 2 hours of the direction switch to west. Good Luck!!

Cheers,

Chris

Cheers, appreciate the feedback. I have a hunch there will be surfable waves but work came up for tomorrow. I will definitely have my eyes on upcoming sessions as we head into spring which tends to have more onshore flow than winter.

Pity, by forecast looks really good at 7am. You have 200km of straight West winds, 20-35knots and then no wind at beach. It will be glassy with just surf and no wind. If it were on a weekend I would go. Good eye KD.

The big westerly has been pumping through JDFS right through to JWSP as forecast. Race Rocks has been building steadily since 3am and is now a steady W35mph. JWSP has jumped from calm to ten knots to W22G31 in an hour. Hopefully the forecast convergence zone will stay south of the East Entrance of JDFS keeping the westerly strong all day. Have fun to those who made the trip :D

Cheers,

Chris
