Locust Report for Tuesday

Kitesurfing shop talk

by Alton » Tue Nov 04, 2014 12:52 pm

Dave Culver (Bellingham local on 14m + surfboard) and I (10m + surfboard) scored a 2 hrs session (8:30 - 10:45) in SE 14-18 in super flat water with 1 foot ramps. Could have been longer if it wasn't for the 30 min border wait. Anyway, that's 3 consecutive days.

I wonder if Spanish Banks will blow this afternoon ... hmmmmm

Dave Culver recommends joining https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bellingham-board-sports for anyone to frequents Locust Beach.

It's a Google Group named "Bellingham Board Sports" - very similar to the classic newsgroups but private membership. I was approved within a couple of hours.

Based on yesterday's water levels at Locust:

3 feet was knee high after a 5 min walk. Enough to clear windsurf/surfboard fins.

5 feet was chest high outside. Comfortable to walk back if wind shuts down.

Thanks for the info Alton. :D
Two questions:
  • When you say "5 min walk" which way were you walking - upwind (south) to the deeper water or out from the beach (west) across the bank?
  • "5 feet was chest high outside" - similar question - was this upwind (south) to the deeper water or straight out from the beach (west) across the bank?

Thanks

5 min walk SOUTH towards the pier takes you to deeper water. In fact, last time I was there with Jerry, Rob and Clay in negative 1' tide (June 14) we were kiting in knee high water right at the pier. It was a 20 min walk (over 1 km) from the pier back to Locust beach.

Yesterday I had to work really hard to keep upwind on my 10m kite so my trajectory was WSW from the launch. The wind tanked at 10:30 so I had to walk in chest (lower rib) deep water at 5' tide.

:D Thanks Alton. That's what I figured. Just wanted to make sure I understood (and that others weren't walking out to the west looking for deeper water that isn't there. ;)
