Thanks for posting these, I sailed point roberts and was wondering what it looked like in white rock!

How was PR Brad? Did you sail through westside shore break and sail upwind to the sandbank?

I sailed the west side despite being VERY tempted to go play in the current swell on the south (very nice looking) however the NW direction meant it was blowing quite offshore and didn't want to risk the consequences of a breakdown especially since it was my first time sailing. I rigged 5.3 and walked northbound on the west bank until I could make reaches without sailing past the point. It was fun, lots of sealife there and very epic feeling in the deep water, however I would not return on the same wind direction as it wasn't really the greatest sea state. I would love to try sailing off the point on a better wind direction; I'm sure it would be amazing if the setup was good. One marked difference I notice is that White Rock has the distinct advantage of being shallow for miles. With the right setup this allows the waves to roll in banks and you can sail the whole area without any stress or concern... On a good day pretty much anywhere you are; there are fun waves (not necessarily big; but crispy) The west bank of point bob still has a considerable amount of deep water and this means you have to work hard to get to where the waves are rolling = alot of positioning to get to the goods. Though it can be hit and miss I think White Rock would have been the better session on this wind direction

White Rock is still my favorite for waves on a westerly but it must be nuking everywhere else (eg. Acadia) before White Rock reaches W25.

On the contrary, White Rock is the worst on a SE - like riding a bucking bronco.

Hi Brad,

I agree with you on the water conditions straight offshore into the deep water at Point Bob. You really need to get upwind far onto that shelf to appreciate what the place has to offer on a W-NW direction.

The shelf is shallow enough to stand on in low tide with the water being only 3-5 feet deep. You need to sail about the equivalent distance upwind as the border marker is from the main parking lot at Centennial to get into the good area.

Have a look on Google Maps and you'll see quickly where the shallow shelf extends to. I think you would find the wave conditions every bit as good as White Rock, only much bigger, once you get far enough upwind.

It's very similar to the huge improvement in wave size and spacing just south west of Wreck Beach compared to the point at Acadia where everyone usually goes.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks Chris, I took a look at google maps and I see the shelf. Next time I will try to walk my gear up the beach a bit more and try sailing where the shelf is. Some days the west wind just doesnt quite make it to White Rock so it's good to have options

Brad - how did you find the shelf using Google Maps?
Is this what you see? If so, where is the shelf?

you have to zoom in, its the sand bank from that fills in the bay i think... I can only see this really having enough fetch for waves of decent size and period on a west or soutwest due to the ferry slip
