Shaping a directional kiteboard

Kitesurfing shop talk

Hello all,

I thought I would post some photos of my process shaping a directional. As Adrien mentioned in his Thruster conversion post we work out of a studio called Shapers Vancouver. Good guys with heaps of knowledge.

I wanted to build a board that would be ok a first directional and maybe in some mushy waves. I went with a 5'2 outline that was based off the Slingshot Screamer. I used Aku Shaper to get the outline, rails, thickness and rocker where I wanted and then printed out the template.

The board is shaped out of EPS foam to keep the weight down since I will be adding many layers of glass. I also decided to inlay some Divinycell PVC foam on the top deck to help with stiffness and durability.

Last week I glassed the top deck with 3 layers of glass and laying in some carbon tape down the center. I will add the carbon to the rails and bottom next week. To finish the plan is to use fabric where the PVC is currently then another glass sheet with a hot coat. The graphics will go in there somewhere.

This has been a really great experience. I love shaping and glassing. Who knew!
Attached are the photos.

That's great. Great shape. I am always thinking that if top of board is reinforced with carbon fiber then stubby windsurf boards could be made out of a foam template with more volume, etc. Thanks for sharing.

My board was completed this summer. A few friends tried it out and I got some great feedback!
