Windsurfing Helmets

Windsurfing shop talk

I'm thinking of getting a helmet for windsurfing when my season starts again this spring. Too many close calls with out-of-control sailing students at Jericho last year. Any recommendations on helmets that are good for windsurfing and inexpensive? Who sells such a thing in the Lower Mainland? Or, is there somewhere better online? Cheers.

I have tried a lot of different helmets and really like the Gath Yeti.
  • Sizing chart is accurate
  • Fitting strip lets you use one helmet with and without hood
  • Vents can be opened (for warm weather) and closed (for cold weather)
  • Ear flaps can also be open and closed
  • Designed for use in the surf

Not available locally but the Gorge Surf House and Big Winds both stock them.

Thanks for the suggestion on those Gath helmets. I was hoping for something a little more cost effective and accessible. Would a kayak or wakeboard helmet work? For that matter, would a bicycle helmet work? It's just a matter of finding a helmet that is waterproof, drains quickly, and is light enough to prevent whiplash correct?

Cheap: Protec's for about $40 and looks like they have a store in North Vancouver.

I got this one from MEC

My main motivation was to avoid a perforated eardrum.

Unfortunately, I have only worn it twice. It is comfortable, but the strap chafing on my neck after a 4 hour session, unbeknownst to me, left a burn right across my neck. It looked like I tried to hang myself.

 Does your helmet have a soft cover on the strap as shown in the photos? If not you might want to try to pick one up.
