Windsurfer Deck Repair

Windsurfing shop talk

by Alton » Thu Sep 18, 2014 12:41 pm

Last weekend AJ discovered a soft spot on deck of my JP 93 FSW windsurfer between the front and rear footstraps. I left it with Rob Mulder for repair. Rob says this is common in production boards from where we place our back foot gybing. After 350 sessions of gybing (50% in Squamish chop) this should be no surprise. Hope it will be ready for the next Boundary Bay session - still nothing in the forecast.

Good point. I'm not spending much so I can buy some time - both on the water and to find the right board.

I picked up a used 84 2012 JP FSW Pro, with the tri fin set up. I used it at the Gorge and Florence. I would suggest going with a way smaller centre fin for waves or The Gorge than the stock fin. I also have the 106 JP wave Thruster. That is more a slog and ride Wave board for a real wave. I found it doesn't plane up fast at all. I also rode a friends 2013 111 JP FSW pro. I liked that one too. For what we get most of the time I don't think you can go wrong with these new tri fin FSWs.

I replaced my stock JP fin because I found it are too large and hard to turn. I've always wanted a JP FSW with trusters thinking I could remove the trusters for local conditions. I'll probably stay with 93L since it gives me most range at my weight (180 lbs).

The board was one of the used rentals Windance had. I wanted the 93 but when I got to the Gorge, although supposedly in B condition, it had a very soft deck. The 84 was in much better shape so I took that. So far it's great. I am about the same weight as you and I think the 93 would be fine unless over 30 k. I used the 84 L in Florence in over 30 k. I was using a 21 cm fin. I don't have anything smaller in power box. I use a 17 cm A box fin on the wave thruster in bigger waves. I need a 17 and a 19 power box I figure. I think the Fanatics come with a 19 cm. I used the 84 as a single fin in gusty gorge winds into the lower 20s and it worked very well. You can give it a spin when you get to CB Alton.
