SBX - The Sandbanks Thread

Windsurfing shop talk

by C36 » Fri Sep 12, 2014 10:47 am

Most who have spent time in Ontario are likely aware of Sandbanks (SBX). A beautiful wide open beach that faces over 200 km of open Lake Ontario to the west and can deliver some amazing down-the-line wave sailing better than most of the spots on the 'Great' Lakes. Every fall, SBX usually delivers up a few epic days and sailors converge on this spot from great distances to enjoy these special days. :D 8-)

 The purpose of this thread is to share some of the reports of these sessions with those out west - both those that have been fortunate enough to experience this special place and those that have yet to. It also helps to pass the time and build the stoke while we wait for our WINDter sailing season to start.

"...small waves, medium waves, long clean peelers and more. Jumping was off the charts as usual and the best conditions are at uppers that you don't get to see in pictures.."

Ilan's shots
Jean-Sebastien's shots

More to come (there was a group getting rocked off the water again today - Oct 8)

That looks like fun! What do you call this sport, kite sailing or something?

;) I hear you, it always a bitter-sweet time of year for me as I know most of the places firing and some of the people there ripping it up and yet there is usually NOTHING happening here.
 :?
Somehow it helps to share their fun and release the angst. ;)

Reports of mid-3's and 10+ hit down-the-line sailing on 'monster' waves from SBX on October 8.

Fish's session log (Oct 8)
Fathom's session log

Looks like Erie went off too.

I think I will have to see if I can transfer to our Toronto branch every Sept to November to get me some of those Westerly gales again. It's been too long! Never had the chance to sail SBX but had many epic days on Lake Erie at Sherkston and Nickel Beach. Let's hope for some divine intervention this weekend as it has been too long.

Ilan's pictures of Oct 8 & 9)

If you look closely you can see one shot of Reiner outrunning a close-out wave.

October 9th: "Beautiful sunny day... ...not as strong as expected and died early. However can't complaint, still 4hrs of 4.2 then 5.0 with small but somewhat clean waves." Fathom

"Light to moderate winds forecast so out of the office for some time well spent playing with the camera settings. I stayed @ West Point with Ilan, JF, John and a few others while the Ottawa gang played on Outlet Beach. Not epic by any means but windy enough and sunny to boot. I love this place!"
