Wind Foil Flyer?

Windsurfing shop talk

What Flyer sail would you recommend for 12 to 18/20 knots? Hover Glide Infinity 76 and Wizard 125. I weigh suited up about 84kg.

Looking for Jericho, Porteau and Baja when on a 5.5 I am slogging and barely planing.

Squamish I usually stick to the river or up b the wall on my windsurfer and sail 4.5 and 5.0, occasionally 5.5.

Any thoughts? A 5.2 or 6.0? Thinking the Flyer FR...

I estimate I'm similar weight geared up and have the same board and Infinity 76. Not sure how long you've been foiling but for me there's a massive difference between 12 and 18/20 when wind foil. For sails my gap is from a regular freestyle/wave 5.3 to a 6.8 wind foil sail. I would not want less of a gap since when the wind gets lighter, it takes more. I also find a big advantage of the windfoil sail in light wind since it has cams. When the wind is light the cams keep the sail shape (less of a factor when it's say 18 or so and it's good on 4.5).

I use an 8.2 flyer most days at Jericho. I would go 6.0 or 7.0 FR

Ok, maybe my range is too much and unreasonable. :D

Maybe I should consider a Flyer for ~12 knots and then rely on my wave sales.

In that case would a 6.0 with 430 mast size be good? Don't really want much bigger...

I guess the gap from 5.5 wave to 6.0 Flyer not great, but maybe the additional stability with more low end worth it??

I don't really know as I haven't tried it. I'm pretty sure it would make AT LEAST some difference. Question is whether it's enough for the wind your facing.

Being able to pump to foil makes a big difference. Yes it can be a lot of work but you get smarter with it with practice.

The cams on the sail will help once on the foil vs wave sail that may turn off if the wind is too light.

When you go to light wind, you realistically need MUCH bigger for each small increment of lighter wind. Even with massive pumping my 6.8, I can not match the folks on their 8.5s.

For me, I went with the duotone foil sail as it works with my 430 mast and my older boom. I went with the biggest I could find without having to get another mast or boom.

Sick video. Balz is insane.

I should have moved to Euro Pin style a while ago, over the years I became too invested in US Chinook style. I like to rig up three sails when at Nitinat or Baja... so figure almost a $1k to change...

Another advantage of the euro-pin is you can rig shorter luff lengths. Because some sail sizes need less extension than the smallest setting offered by a US cup extension.

When I was windfoiling I had the Wizard 125L with a Flyer 8.0. This 8.0 or a 7.3 Naish Sprint I had before it, got the most use of all my sails in the summer as it was rare to get much more than 14 knots. The next size down was a 5.5, but a 6.0 would have been a better spread with the 8.0. I rode an Infinity 84 foil and weigh 85kg. Don't be afraid to rig big, with fickle Jericho I usually regret underrigging rather than overrigging.
