I use an old Apple Watch 5 (small size) and various apps for tracking, so you really don't have to spend a lot or wear a giant watch. The key is to keep the watch UNDER your wetsuit so that it doesn't get high speed water infiltration. Bonus, then it can still measure your heart rate.
If you like to track using a variety of apps for different sports or just too cheap to subscribe to Waterspeed, the most cost effective solution is to buy HealthFit app ($5 one time fee). This app auto takes data from other tracking apps and imports them into your iPhone ecos, even from free versions. You can then auto export them into Strava or other fitness and tracking apps as you like. HealthFit also has great metrics of its own.
