GoPro and helmets

Windsurfing shop talk

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with buying used GoPro cameras? I'm interested in getting one but not sure of what I need to look out for, other than a dud battery. Is there any moving parts for the image stabilization?

And, can anyone recommend a locally available helmet? I tried on two at MEC in the summer, neither fit very well and they didn't have much stock. I might buy one online if I can get a good return policy.

thanks

My GoPro Hero 7 Black's image stabilization is done via firmware/ software. No mechanical moving parts other than the push buttons and access doors.

I've found the gopro to be pretty tough, I've had 2, a Hero 5 and a Hero 2 but I bought them new. I think if they are used for water sports they should be fine if rinsed. You can see the salt water corrosion if they haven't been. Not sure about skiing or mountain biking though. The battery can be an issue, it's good to have 2 and a charger. There might be some good deals on the Hero Black 7 coming up for Black Friday. That's when I bought my 5.

As for a Helmet, I bought my first helmet at North Shore Ski And Board but I think it was a snowboarding one. I then got a Gath Gedi which is a great windsurfing helmet. You would probably have to get it online and I just noticed that they are now expensive.
I found a few Neil Pryde helmets here...

I've been using a cheap SJCAM 4000 for the last few years up until I lost it a few days ago. I would be choked had I lost a GoPro 8. My cam's image stabilization doesn't come close to the recent GoPros at all, but for foiling it really doesn't matter much, it's just so smooth. If I were doing lots of MTB videos I would definitely want way better stabilization or a gimbal.

Never bought any used either but all of mine have held up perfectly and maintained battery life decently. The sessions are nice and small but don't have swappable batteries. They also make bright orange floaties for each camera. I strap mine to the end of the boom, which turns out to be a decent viewpoint.

I've just used old snowboard helmets windsurfing so far. Some start to deteriorate a bit as the epoxy/foam isn't meant to be submerged in salt water

Helmet wise, I have the NP FreeRide.

I can't comment on the comfort level. I just put it on and that is it.

Regarding the camera, it depends what you want to do. Most guys get nice shots with the GoPro Max and use this stick (you don't see it in the video).

But if you just want a decent camera (waterproof), most used GoPro cameras are good. I have a Hero 3 and still use it. It all depends on your budget and what you are going to do.
The GoPro Max is nice for windsurfing & snowboarding. But for general shots and better quality, the Hero 8 or Hero 9 is better.
