Deviator

Windsurfing shop talk

Hi all,

I will finally get my new foil and board tomorrow and being new at foiling, I was told that it would be a good idea to get a deviator or similar device for the first few sessions. Unfortunately I forgot to order one. Does anyone have one that they do not need anymore? I will gladly pick it up anywhere.

Thanks!
Dominic

I’ve never used a deviator and I sort of wished that I had one because I’ve had to do two repairs on the nose of my board. Having said that, I’m worried about it’s potential to damage the deck of the board at the mast foot. As a mast comes down on it, there is a very large lever arm and I imagine that a huge force can be transferred to the board. Has anyone asked board manufacturers and asked their opinion on them? They might have some good data on it.

I had a Deviator on my Formula Board & 9-6 Roberts & hated it - always seemed to be in the way - hard to Waterstart & a huge lump on the Deck.
I changed to an old style Mast Base Protector installed on the Mast under the Boom in the Boom Cut Out.
Works great - no nose or rail damage since - could be a problem if you grab your mast there for some reason

Taken from Aussie foiling forum.
1) zip tie anchors, zip tie to Velcro, foam noodles.

Thanks for the advice! I am a bit concerned by the lever effect also so I’ll go easy the first days and keep holding on to the boom and yank on my back arm if I go in a catapult.

For my recently acquired (spring) windfoil set up I'm using the surfbent.

https://www.silentsports.com/windsurfin ... v2/wasb22/

I actually got version 1 for cheaper knowing version 2 was coming soon. Version 2 allows for 2 pin mast base which I would have preferred but I doubt any "day to day" function difference.

It's really a variation of the old deviator. I think it seems better as it's lower and supposed to absorb some of the hit which I hope reduces the lever effect. It is a bit awkward re-positioning the sail when in the water but not a big deal to me. Using this with a mechanical universal I don't notice it at all when sailing. No board damage. I'd have to say that it wasn't my first few session that had the biggest risk of board damage. It was a few sessions after that when I started to allow more speed. I can't know for sure but there's a good chance there would have been some board damage without the surfbent.

FYI, Surfbent V2 is out. I have one sitting in the USA for the past 60 days. I can't compare to V1 yet until the borders open again. This is what I use.

The other thing that I forgot to mention is that Chinook has a new flex mast base that should help. Euro/US/1 or 2 bolt.
