whistler wind?

Windsurfing shop talk

by Richi » Sat Aug 01, 2020 10:47 am

Im spending 5 days in whistler next week and wondering if I should bother bringing my board and foil? Anyone sail up there on Alta lake before ? just wondering if they can get a thermal stronger than 10 knots? GFS is saying 5-12 some days, not sure if that would be accurate or maybe hopefully more? cheers. rich

Whistler wind. I have heard foiling is doable.

Look at the history for the last week.

Hey Richi

Alta Lake gets afternoon thermals so I always take my big board and usually rig a 5.3 for the gusts. I haven't foiled there though, just regular fin sailing. 100+ m planing runs then turn around and come back. The wind tends to swirl sometimes and come from various directions. Never sailed Green Lake but it may be worth checking out, especially with your foil.

Just thought I'd add to this... I'm just starting windsurfing again, been to Nexen a few times. I live up in Whistler and will try and get out on Alta.

So if you see someone out on the water not knowing what they're doing, its me!

Alta lake is typical small lake sailing...can be fun. there is a boat ramp in Alta Vista north of Lakeside park, normal launch is at Alta Lake Park but parking and hauling your gear down over the tracks is a pain.
Green lake is very very cold. Launch would be at the lookout north of Rainbow subdivision. As the lake narrows to the north it gets very shallow, like sub 4' in the middle.

Yea that's pretty much what I grew up windsurfing on, actually it was more like the size of lost lake hahah!

Plan is to try and check out Alta on a weekend nice and early from Rainbow park, try and park close to the grass. Looks like the winds hit around 10am ish. I'll probably take my 6.8 (not actually tried rigging this one yet) and see how I go

Thanks for the boat launch tip. Nice launch and rigging area. Parked up on the road. Just got off the water. Super gusty but still fun to rip around Whistler! Foiled on every tack and buzzed the dock!
