Paint or repair?

Windsurfing shop talk

I have some type of crack near the nose of my board. It certainly doesn't seem like it's at all structural, but it's kind of hard for me to tell. 3 options are:
a) leave it
b) buff with 220 grit and put on some type of topcoat with UV inhibitor
c) sand down and reinforce with a bit of glass + epoxy, then some type of topcoat with UV inhibitor

Any suggestions on a, b or c?

If I go with b or c, what kind of topcoat would I use? I've done a lot of fiberglass and epoxy work on wooden boats and I used a 2 part water soluable polyurethane. I could also go with simple outdoor/var urethane.

Yup, sand it down, glass, paint. That looks more than just cosmetic. Just finished doing a similar job on my Futura.

The quick and dirty repair that I'd do for a small ding like that, is use Solarez epoxy. Mask around the area and leave a 1 cm margin and then apply some Solarez and then work it smooth with saran wrap and then leave it in the sun for a couple hours to cure.

What do you use for paint? I'm not terribly concerned about colour matching, I'm more interested in UV protection otherwise the epoxy will degrade.

Is that your new 2020 Blast? How is it (except dings)?

For the paint on mine I actually brought the board in to CMAX (NAPA Paint) in Burnaby. They color scanned it and did up a custom aerosol.

Edit: Fibertek is the place to go for your other materials. Also in Burnaby.

Solar rez or similar will work good for such a small repair.

If you dont have any handy, use a small patch of 4oz glass and mix some microballons or cabosil into your resin 50% by volume. Will make it white opaque, but sand much much easier.

You could tint your resin to match then just have to clear coat, but that is overkill unless you already have tint. That is how I fixed a similar ding this weekend on the new board I made. Invisible after.... another plus to a brushed carbon finish.

How much did the paint job cost? I don't think I'll go that route, but I'm curious.

No solar rez but I have 4oz glass, epoxy and microballoons. I'll go that route. I guess I could try to mix my own tint but I think I'd be terrible at it. Fairing the white epoxy/microballoons might look ok. It doesn't really matter, the whole thing looks pretty bad as soon as I step on it

cheers
