My understanding of the black and white is it is intended to be more zen - neutral in the surroundings and let the power and beauty of the surroundings be the real show. See question and answer number eight here.

S8 – Cape Sebastian (2018 June 18)


Surf checks. Morning fog and south wind gave way to sunshine and glass for a SUP at the Cape following surf checks at visitor centre, Meyer`s Beach, Secret Cove, and the Cape. The XL south swell at the Cape won. All seven took to the water – Swiss Michael, Swiss Markus, Redbaron, Tsawwassen, Johnny, Heather, and I. There was also one local surfer out and Luke longboarding in Hunters Cove. Some bombs were caught and some smooth faces ridden but they proved hard to catch so wave counts were pretty modest. Still memorable. Post session surf checks at Pistol River viewpoint, Port Orford (creek and wayside), and Rocky Point, but nothing drew us out onto the water again. Also marked the end of the first wave of campers as Swiss Michael, Swiss Markus, Redbaron (may return), and Tsawwassen all headed north; and Johnny and Heather headed south (may return). Sad when the group splits. Safe travels all!

S9 – Cape Sebastian – SUP (2018 June 19)


Content. Figured since I was now travelling solo I would stay at Turtle Rock RV Park, but when I pulled in and checked out the last available spot it just didn’t feel right. Stayed at the campo and it only felt slightly creepy being there alone. Decided to stay local and forego the trip north to Florence. Did laundry, assembled my 2018 trip playlist, and ran errands this morning. Arrived at the cape just in time to see the fog cap burn off the island to reveal glassy sets. Vintage station wagon drive-by signaled something special was going to happen today. A calmer (less competing NW cross swell), steadier (less roll) younger brother version of yesterday where almost every wave was up for grabs. There was still a variety on offer, but differences were not as extreme. Joined by a veteran surfer from SoCal who is staying in Port Orford who had stacks of local knowledge and was super chill. He was headed for Kissing Rock, but returned to the cape. Fun to have someone to share the session with.

S10 – Crescent City – SUP (2018 June 19)


Glass Off (a real one). NW wind stirred things up at the cape just after we left the water and teased, but never amounted to much, but I was glad because I was curious to see what Crescent City looked like for an evening SUP. The peeling right that we saw at the north end of the beach was there again, only bigger. Took first few waves further to the south then gradually joined the pack of about six surfers hitting the peak of the right. Some friendly, some not so much, but all good. Scored more than a few and some were moderately steep with some torque, but slow enough that you could stay out on the clean face (if no traffic in the way). That was the icing on the two session SUP cake today. Low risk, high reward, super fun! Pelicans flying by in formation and an osprey dive fishing. One guy surfing in a shorty – looks like its officially summer in NorCal. One week in and just hit double digits today. A slower pace than years past, but that`s OK. Dinner at the Big Game Casino (three decent chicken tacos for eight dollars). Overnighted in the redwoods again. Planning on a surf check in the morning.

S11 – Crescent City – SUP (2018 June 20)


Glass. Got another crack at the peeling right this morning. Only three of us out – high-stoke Judes (SUP), a longboarder, and me. Some heathy sets rolling through with lullage and a few bombs thrown in to make sure you were paying attention (dropped into a few and took more than a few on the head on the inside). Pelicans flew by in the distance. Osprey fished from the air. Fun way to start the day and this put the shine back on Crescent City. So much so that I risked triggering my PTSD by revisiting the Crescent City WalMart to use their WiFi and do some shopping. All went well, this time.

Leo also mentioned he has been sailing a ‘new’ spot called Chrissy Field (south of Brookings just before the Oregon/Cali state border) on days when the rock is ‘crazy’. Sounds like there are washrooms and showers at the Welcome Centre. Some pictures from a quick look-see here.

Film crew set up at the cape (but didn’t see Ozy). It will be interesting to see what they do over the next few days when it starts blowing 40+ mph.

Looks solid with some big waves showing on Tuesday. Might be better at the Rock most days though with not much South swell for the Cape. Sad I had to come home for a few things or I would have stayed longer, Dave and the others should have a great time. If anyone can go now would be a good time. Small gear required, those look like 3.7 or smaller days.

You're welcome. Hope they help to take the edge off the SOC hangover and the transition back.

S12 – Pistol River (2018 June 21)


Back. Johnny and Heather returned from the redwoods. Yuma returned from Portland (but was without peer on the water today). Wind came back today (early but light). Some swell lingered (but not enough to draw us out at the cape). Playful session at the rock (first for the trip for me). Some locals out. A few kiters on hover boards (foils). Shared a few runs and some pointers with Heather and she seemed to be pleased with the results post-`lesson`. Yuma thought the conditions were “so-so” but Heather was stoked with sailing the rock and making gains today! Big gear for most (except Yuma and Heather). Super burritos with Yuma. Slideshow and tales of Long Beach at the campo.

S13 – Pistol River (2018 June 22)


Medium. Similar to yesterday only larger, bumping it up to ‘medium’ for Pistol River. Still no haunted house, but there was a ‘death from above’ ride (California Joe just about took me out doing a broad reach from above). Yuma was putting on a show again today – Trudy was impressed. Late in the session saw something rather large grey and white in the shore break just as Johnny and I were launching. I called to Johnny and he saw it too. Later Leo mentioned he had seen it as well and just sailed around thinking it was sand getting sucked to the surface. But it didn’t ‘feel’ sharky, so we all went out again. Heather graduated to getting in the larger shore break. Yuma said the medium swell was “great practice” and I saw him boosting some big airs off the larger rouge waves on the outside. Word on the beach was it was a “fun” session. Quick look-see at the south jetty, but small and gusty. Grilled plates of fresh green lingcod, steaks and smokies at the campo for dinner.
