Board for learning Footstraps.

Windsurfing shop talk

by mjamero » Tue May 23, 2017 8:23 am

My wife is learning the footstraps and blasting. She has a Starboard Hypersonic 105 but the straps are outboard slalom style. Not the best board for learning straps.

What board would you recommend? Anyone have something adequate for sale that would be good with a 5.5-6.0 in typical English Bay sailing? She weighs about 115lbs. Don't tell her I told you ;). I'm thinking something like a Starboard Kode FSW 86-104 range, or Carve 99-111. Any other good models? I prefer Starboard if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I found a 2007 Starboard Kombat 87 for sale. I'm not familiar with this board. Is it any good? Particularly for someone that weighs 115lbs and wanting to learn footstraps and blast?

Kombat is a bump and jump (freestyle wave) board good for winter sailing or lighter days at the Gorge.

For cruising at Squamish or Jericho you might be better off with a freeride board.

It's not about learning straps. It's more about learning to ride the board. Every style of board requires a different stance (and foot strap position). So first decide on the conditions you want to ride in ... then decide on the board.

Race boards like Formulas or Hypersonic are very technical and not very forgiving.

Caroline, learned on a 140 mistral explosion (?) but quickly went down to the 121 starboard carve I had at the time , this was the best tool for her compared to the mistral.

Thanks for the advice guys. I tend to agree on the Carve. The Carve 121 is my go-to freeride board.

Anyone have a carve 99-111 they want to part with??? This would be a good size for her I think.

Found this board in Nanoose Bay. 2001 Carve 99 for $400.

Is a 2001 Carve 99 too old of a design? I was hoping to go no older than the 03 model. They are asking $400 though which is way WAY too much for a board of this age. Even IF in excellent condition. Thoughts.

What's wrong with learning on the carve 121? It's got inboard straps I believe.

Nothing wrong with my wife learning on the Carve 121 except that I am usually on it. :D Looking to get her her own board which so we can sail at the same time.

I found a 2003 Carve 99 yesterday which I bought for her. This will be a good board for my wife to get solid with straps and blasting. However, I am still keeping my eyes open for other board options.
