Boundary Bay Weed Fins

Windsurfing shop talk

How crucial is a weed fin for Boundary? I'm looking to try Boundary for the first time this fall (I know, that's what I said last year. ;) ). I'm currently on the hunt for weed fins (US Box & Power Box) but am hoping I can use a regular fin in the short term. Are there areas of Boundary Bay that are less weedy than others? I would most likely sail at Centennial Beach the first couple sessions to get familiar with the new location and a new board.

After about mid-November a regular fin should be fine. By then storms will have gotten rid of all the weeds. One week it can be brutal with rafts of weeds a la Life of Pi, and the next week it will be perfect.

Mandatory? OK, fair enough. What weed fins are you guys using with what gear? Fin size to board size to sail size ratios etc etc...

I already posted a wanted in the BS section but... I'm looking for a weed fin to go with a 94L Kode FSW (US Box) and one for a 78l JP FSW (Power Box). The relative cheap would be good, especially for the JP board because I only paid $150 for it.

So weeds up to mid November. What time of year do they start to grow?

Weeds were so bad yesterday I was thrown off my surfboard when I hit a thick patch.

I've seen weeds well past November. Historically November delivers the best windsurfing of the year - even better than the Gorge so don't take any chances and get your weed fin NOW!

Usually big boards are powerbox, and small boards are US box. Are you sure about your boards?

Yes Mandatory, and like the others have said all year round. The Mano is popular, use the fin selector guide to choose your size.

mj I can lend you a fin if you a strapped for cash. Just let me know when you are coming out.
The only issue is, like Tony mentioned, my bigger Mano fin (26) is power box and then I have a 23CM and 20CM US box Manos. The 23 will work on your 94 but it might feel a little small.
