Downhaul Rope - Marlow Formuline Local Supplier

Windsurfing shop talk

by mjamero » Mon Jan 18, 2016 11:47 am

I'm looking to replace the downhaul rope on all my extensions and maybe do my outhauls as well. It seems a lot of people recommend Marlow Formuline. I'm having a challenge finding a local supplier. Anyone know where I can find this rope or an equivalent locally? If I recall, Airtime just sells Chinook rope and West Marine does not do Formuline. I am unsure about West Marine's recommended equivalent which is NEW ENGLAND ROPES V-12 Vectran Single Braid: http://www.westmarine.com/buy/new-engla ... 71_005_002

This is the Formuline rope. 12 strand tightly braided Dyneema SK78:

I'm not sure if there is a place that sells it locally. Dave might know?

You can order it from Sailworks though.

The only other local supplier I can think of is Steveston Marine and their website looks like they deal mainly with Samson (they used to carry Marlow).

Looks like Sailworks carries the Formuline that you are looking for (see the link Michael provided). Until today I didn't know the brand name, I have tried a lot of different line on offer locally and now only use the Formuline from Sailworks for downhauls. It is extremely durable for downhauls, but found I prefer something slightly larger and softer (for sure bite in the cleat) for outhaul and inhaul. Shipping rope by mail should be rather cheap if you can't find a supplier locally.

I found a local supplier for Marlow Formuline. Victory Products aka Rekord Marine Enterprises has it. 8194 Ontario Street off of Marine Drive. They sell it by the foot or if you have $844 burning a hole in your pocket you can buy the entire 200m spool. :D

I just bought 50 feet which should allow me to do 3-4 extensions as well as the outhaul on my three booms and maybe even the boomhead clamps. At $1.29 CAD/foot it certainly is not cheap. However, it is still quite a bit cheaper than purchasing Formuline from Sailworks which is $5 USD/meter plus shipping. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Thanks, that's good to know! I'll be stocking up for the Oregon Coast trip.
